I’ve been in Second Life a long long time, long enough to see an incredible amount of changes. Most have been for the better, but I’m sad to say that others have, in my opinion, been a great loss. I trace some of it back to the creation of Homestead Regions, which I know a lot of people love, but their creation meant the death of what I’ll call the open regions (I don’t remember the actual name) which allowed for vast amounts of open SAILABLE water around islands with just a whale or some dolphins here or there for interest. It was wonderful! And although many of the subcultures that once flourished in SL and gave it so much diverse character may still exist, they tend to keep much more to themselves in their own enclaves. Steampunk is one of those subcultures, one that has always held particular appeal for me. Yes, it’s still here, but nowhere at the strength or popularity that it once was. And yes, I found plenty of designers still catering to this market, but in hours of searching I discovered relatively little in terms of physical locations where steampunk was the rule and done in a way that made you stop and go WOW. What a sad loss for the grid, though I’m hoping that my search skills were just lacking, and there’s a whole hidden world of steampunk hiding somewhere for those who know where to find it. At least I’ll be dressed and looking good if and when I get there! 😉
