Nevermore

I’m going to make an exception to my “rule” and leave my fae persona for this post, because it’s a hard one to write. My mother passed away on Saturday night. She had almost 24 hours of pain before they got her meds, and the permission to get in to see her on a compassionate visit (the facility is in COVID lockdown) came too late for me to see her. Although death is a part of life, and this is one that we’ve been anticipating ever since she fell and broke her hip a few months ago, staring death in the face is never easy and even harder to fully accept. This particular post had already been shot and tentatively titled “The Shadow of Death.” Even if I’d known how prophetic it would be, I doubt I could have been more prepared since in my heart I knew her last days were upon us. Ironically, she died 10 years + 1 day from when my dad passed, and she’s been wanting to join him ever since. She is now at peace, and the healing can begin for those of us who are still here, holding her memory in our hearts. Life goes on, and I know that my second life here on the grid will be even more important in the days to come as a place to leave it all behind for just a bit, and escape into my world of fantasy.

Being queen isn’t always a glorious thing. Life lately seems to be for the birds… lots of little (and some really big) things going wrong, causing different levels of grief and aggravation for my poor human. Thankfully, my escape into the world of fantasy keeps me relatively shielded from all of that, although my time awake has been severely curtailed due to her necessary preoccupation with real life. I’m therefore taking full advantage of my limited time inworld, exploring new lands at a less leisurely pace, searching with greater focus for new finds and wonders in order to accomplish what’s needed to do my blogs. That said, I’m off on my wings of fancy to see what I can see, and do what I can do, sprinkling a little fairy dust along the way! May the blessings of the fairies light your way!!!

Patrolling the Water Hole

I need to admit that sometimes lately I’m getting very confused about who I am. Once upon a time, my backstory was very solid, and I was very sure about my place, my role as it were, here on the grid. I dressed and acted to fit my role. But as I embarked on my life as a blogger, I started experimenting with more looks, more roles. There’s the pure fae, the princess, the goddess/priestess, the warrior… most with a medieval tonality but not all… I don’t just change my clothes or hair or whatever… I put together a “look”, creating a new story, and And it feels so very right… until it’s time to move on. There’s always some reluctance, a small tug of sadness when it’s time to take off a persona, fold it up and put it away on the shelf. But as that next new look takes form, almost every single time I once again get to exult in that feeling of “this is it… this is me!” I’ve come to realize that they’re all just facets of my hybrid fae/elven personality… but oh, my self-identity does teeter and totter. It’s not quite an identity crisis, but it does take a bit to reorient myself. Does some of the princess carry over into the warrior? And does the heart of the warrior beat under the royal finery? Yes to both… I’m a warrior princess, building my new backstory look by look… working out the intricacies of who I am, bit by bit. But even a somewhat confused warrior princess has patrol duty… with plenty of time to think! May the blessings of the fairies guide us both!!!!

I love being a fae. I see all the issues my human counterpart is dealing with, the stress and frustration and worry involved in moving her elderly mother into memory care, dealing with the deterioration of a personality and the growth of an aggressive alternate that comes into full power in the afternoons, like an evil queen menacing her subjects. Me, I’m so totally removed from it all, living my life of beauty and fantasy. I try to share some of the magic and wonder, sprinkling a little fairy dust in the hopes of easing her path; the birds and the other messengers that nature sends to whisper about the goings in in that human realm tell me that so far today seems to be a bit better, but I sense her constantly waiting for the phone to ring, summoning her to try to help someone who has in essence become a stranger. It’s so sad… I share her sense of helplessness, because these things are beyond my power, and all I can do is bide my time and tempt her with the chance to escape into this world of color and beauty for even just a little while. I shall work harder to pass on the blessings of the fairies, because there’s no star too far, and no dream too grand, because fairy dust is like love… it creates magic whenever you give it away!

Tree Lovers

I don’t know if all fantasy folk feel as connected to nature as I do. Perhaps it’s the woodland blood flowing through my veins, but I’m always at my most serene when surrounded by lush natural environments. I recently moved out of Linden housing in their themed fantasy environment and onto my own land… I was fortunate enough to find almost exactly what I wanted… land high on a high overlooking a river that is a “protected” channel (nothing can be built on it, perfect!), with several other fantasy lots nearby, and all of us surrounded by abandoned land. I have no idea how long the neighborhood will stay as open and natural (mainland never seems to say pristine for very long), but for now I’m so happy with my little home lot (though I’m craving more and more land, like the human has). There are just so many wondrous items out there, and I’d love to give them all a home, but sadly my space is quite limited so I need to be very very picky. Fantavatar & Moonstruck – Forest Tree Wedding Arch. There’s a Greek myth about an old couple (Baucis & Philemon) who — as a reward for having shown hospitality to two disguised gods testing humanity as they always did — were granted their wish to be turned into two intertwining trees upon their death. Two trees locked in a lovers embrace has become a not common theme in art, but to see it exemplified so magnificently in nature (well, in SL nature!)… How absolutely fitting for a fae!!! I first saw this amazing landscaping item at the Fantasy Faire, & built part of my new lot around it as a focal point, using it as the “gateway” to the upper part of my land (built on a steep hillside). 45 meters tall, with 7 foliages & 2 barks in a changing HUD, the arch is a stunning addition that weaves fantasy, magic, & romance into a beautiful work of fantasy nature that adds a sense of wonder to ANY garden, fantasy or otherwise. Copy/modify, with a LI of only 8!!!! You really should see this in person, so beautiful!!!

A Midsummer Night

I’m having so much fun as a fantasy blogger! I get to be so many different types of fae, it’s almost like playing a game! Today I have shed my warrior personality (which I will admit to being one of my favorite “attitudes”) and instead donned that of a highly feminine forest creature, exploring the hidden secrets of the mystical woods… It’s lovely to be off guard duty, to simply stroll through the woods and enjoy its beauty and enchantment without fear, but still startling at the advance of another… you never know when you might run into a band of fairies or (perish the thought!) humans, and I do like to avoid mischief when wandering alone, unarmed, at night, through a dark forest… whips around at the sound of a cracking branch, my wings stiffening, only to see a doe and her fawn crossing the path… I feel enchantment abounding in this dark section of the woods, and feel that I should hurry down the path towards the light… Till next time, may your burdens be lifted, and may you have an awesome day! The Viking Way

Vikings… who knew they were so popular a culture here in Second Life? Maybe it’s something new, but in all my years fluttering around the grid, I’d never once stumbled onto it. Suddenly I’m seeing outfits, poses, complete avatars, decor & more. So I dressed the part and went exploring the Viking side of life… the list that came up in search was huge (although admittedly quite a bit of it was from the sexual underbelly of SL, but then that’s true of so many search terms). Instead I opted to visit the role-playing & themed communities, properly armed in case winged fantasy folk were unwelcome. As a side note, unless you’ve been here many many years, you may not have run across the “Humans Only” signs at music venues and clubs or been subjected to the taunts, or being shunned from some RPG communities for not exactly fitting their mold; before even my time began, furries — who used to be much more plentiful — were “hunted”. Although creativity still abounds (the recent Fantasy Faire is a prime example!), the world here and its residents used to be much more varied and interwoven… now it’s a much more segregated existence, with many of those who prefer what I’ll term “alt lifestyles” restricting those identities to the RPG areas. It’s kind of sad, really… the diversity added so much IMHO. Although pointed ears have become “a thing” of late, I do draw some strange reactions when mixing with large numbers of humans at stores or events or playing cards. Thankfully, I can’t hear the whispers! But back to the Vikings!!! In my short travels (and they were quite short), I only ran into one Viking… and he was quite polite, asking if I needed assistance when I was just standing there in various armed stances doing a photo shoot. But based on what I saw, it does seem to be a growing community with lots of options… definitely more to explore!!! And in your own explorations, may you be inspired with lightheartedness and laughter, and leave a little sparkle wherever you go!

Portrait of a Fae

I like this new age. In my former existence, years ago before mesh and BOM hit this world, I had “a look”. Yes, I changed my hair and clothes and wings almost every day, but my skin and ears were always the same (and my horns hadn’t grown in yet). At the time, I thought my look was rather exotic and fae-like; I look back on those pictures and I have to admit it, I cringe. Yes, part of it is just normal evolution, but there was just so little available back then in terms of fantasy look (I remember searching and searching and searching for a skin that had some kind of fantasy makeup lol). Now that I’ve been reborn into this more modern age, I love how easily I can totally reinvent myself, to create whole new looks, new personalities, as the mood or inspiration strikes me. Yes, my shape is pretty constant, but other than that, I’m changing everything all the time… in fact, I’m not 100% sure I’d always be recognized without that little name tag floating above my head! And I’m loving each look, each character, so very much that I often don’t want to change for several days… I want to “live in that skin” so to speak, until my blogging commitments force me to move on… and then I fall in love with the next one! Sighs, maybe that makes me a fickle fae, but if so, I’m a happy one! If it’s one thing I’ve learned… “in the midst of our lives, we must find the magic that makes our souls soar.” I’m finding mine… may you find yours!

Moonstruck

Moonstruck. Its definition is “unable to think or act normally, especially because of being in love”. (It’s also the title of one of my all-time favorite movies, with the line “Snap Out of It!”, but that’s for another post, a human one lol!) What’s relevant to THIS post is that it’s also part of the name of one of my new fantasy sponsors. I’m so very excited to be able to share the first of what I can see will be many, many, MANY exceptional fantasy items. And I myself am definitely moonstruck, totally in love with landscaping my new little lot of land, creating my own private wonderland, bursting with color and life and beauty… Fluttering my wings happily as I gaze around at this little corner, which is high on a hill overlooking a largely unsettled river… The beauty of this world never fails to amaze me; I hope you have the opportunity to create a spot that reflects you as much as this does me… Happy shopping!
