So anyone who even casually follows my blog or my FlickR knows that although I always keep all my bits covered, I’m definitely not shy about “rocking my rack.”  Just look at my last pic of me lol! That’s just ONE reason why I’m on Team Pink, supporting the fight against breast cancer.  One of the big events in Second Life supporting this all-important fight is Rock Your Rack presented by Models Giving Back, which is open from October 5th through the 19th.  82 designers, a 10L Hunt, 25 artists who are also in the hunt, and 55 musical performances are all part of this event, with the proceeds from many awesome items being donated to The National Breast Cancer Association.  I know I don’t need to preach about the importance of this cause; in some way, it’s affected every single one of us, if not in actual fact then at least in fear.  Today I’m featuring two of my sponsors who are among this worthy cast… Please take the time to visit this event and support the work of the National Breast Cancer Foundation and their fight for early detection services for all. It’s funny, but no matter how old I get, I never forget all the little fantasies and fairy tales and stories I’ve read and seen throughout my life.  Little everyday things may suddenly bring one to mind, totally out of the blue.  Like when a bell rings, I might think of Clarence getting his wings in It’s A Wonderful Life.  When someone complains that they have no idea what to pack (including myself lol), I laugh to myself when I remember that the most important thing is a towel (A Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy).  And when I suddenly see a light or a candle brighten in a certain way, I always think of Tinkerbell in Peter Pan.  I know that some people will sneer at this.  But for me, I think that the ability to not only remember but to continue to see magic in the world around me is a gift, one that in today’s world I believe is increasingly valuable.  Of course I know it’s not real; but that doesn’t mean that the thoughts, the possibilities, don’t bring a smile, a lifting of the heart, a lightening of the step, in what can be a heavy, exhausting, depressing world.  And the fact is, magic comes in many forms. There’s magic in a beautiful sunset, in the night sky, in a brisk autumn afternoon, at dusk in the summer as the fireflies gather.  So believe like I believe, or don’t… go ahead and deal with things in your way, and I’ll deal with them in mine. We’ll see who smiles more!

Wide Eyed Wonder

It’s amazing how things keep changing and evolving.  Sometimes I just like to stop and think about all the changes and developments I’ve seen here on the grid in my 12 years here.  In fact, this blog post represents a lot of firsts. Number one, it’s my first post using Bakes On Mesh layers (BOM), which now that Firestorm has released a BOM-enabled viewer, will start becoming mainstream as an option to using appliers as more designers and mesh makers jump on board.  I’m lucky that Akeruka (the maker of my primary head) was an early adopter, updating all their deluxe heads — male and female — for BOM.  Although it does offer some interesting options, I wonder how it will impact the world of mesh.  Mesh completely upended the world we knew… will BOM now turn everything back on its head? Time will tell, I suppose; for now, I’m just kicking myself for having tossed all those system tattoos & makeup, but one thing is for certain in SL: there will always be more to buy!  As for first number two: it’s my first post for Out Shop Cancer, the grid-wide and marketplace shopping event benefiting Making Strides and the American Cancer Society.  Starting Oct. 1 and running the entire month, this event will take shoppers across the grid, exploring and shopping at stores in support of Strides. Store-owners will use American Cancer Society breast cancer vendor kiosks to feature special products in their stores. A directory of participating stores will be available at the Strides office on ACS Island as well as on the Making Strides Second Life website.  You can see me there on the list of official bloggers, part of my ongoing effort to use my blogging and try to do some good in the world, and I’m proud to say that the brand for which I’m blogger-manager — Allure Couture — is a participating store as well.  To kick it off, then, it’s only right that I feature one of our outfits where 100% of proceeds go to support the fight against breast cancer.  In light of the enormity of both of those things, my third first is just a little thing, but to me it’s pretty big… it looks like I finally figured out the emails that go out automatically to my email subscribers.  Of course I won’t know until after this is posted, so fingers crossed! Well, I’m back from vacation and ready to ride!  Had an amazing time, feel refreshed & renewed, made a HUGE life-altering choice (we bought a house!), and am already back at work blogging (though I’m a bit rusty… I accidentally knocked off my freckles and forgot to put them back on!!!!). What’s nice about taking a vacation is that even a little break makes what was starting to feel a bit like a chore is now fun again… You’ll be seeing lots of new things going forward as I’ve added some new sponsors over the past weeks, and will definitely be blogging for various seasonal, fund-raising events throughout the fall and winter.  Can’t wait to see what all the designers create, and what I come up with to show them off!  And of course it’s fall, my favorite season, so lots of fun ahead! OK, so another classic movie has made it into my blog, this time a musical. You may as well know… I LOVE musicals.  I love to sing and dance to them… and although I’m pretty good at remembering all the words and all the moves, I unfortunately have absolutely zero talent.  Can’t sing a note lol. But I don’t let that stop me, because the fact is I FEEL great when I’m singing and dancing.  If the others around me don’t appreciate it, well, that’s just too bad lol.  Sometimes when it rains, when I’m in exactly the right mood, I hear that da-da-da-dum, da-da-da-da-da-da dum in my head, and I just can’t help it.  (If you know the movie, you’ll know what I’m talking about; if you don’t, shrugs.)  I’ll even admit that once, many years ago when I was in college and it was lightly raining when I left for a midnight astronomy lab, I actually sang and danced in the rain just like Gene Kelly.  Ok, ok, so it wasn’t “just like”, but it felt fabulous, and I’ve never ever forgotten it, even after all these years!  So let this pic be my little homage to one of my all-time favorite old-style classic musicals. And who knows, maybe we’ll both be dancing the next time it rains!  😉

A Little Time Out

So here I am in the final countdown for my vacation (I leave on Thursday), and I break my little toe.  I have SOOOO much to get done! It’s a busy week at work, I have to clean up, do laundry, pack, not to mention all the blogging I need to try to get done before I go.  And here I am, with a lot of pain (it’s amazing how much a little toe can hurt!) and hobbling around… and hobbling very slowly at that.  I broke it earlier today, so hopefully it will be better and I’ll be better at dealing with it before we leave.  I have plans for lots of walking around and playing golf!!!!  Though I’ll probably head over to an Urgent Care tomorrow, to see what they can do (probably nothing other than tape it).  Send me healing energy, please!  But wow, really makes you think about all the people in the world who don’t have ready access to medical care, even for the really big things, not just little annoyances like broken toes.  Brings to home why I’m blogging for the Spoonful of Sugar Festival, a fundraising event for Doctors without Borders, Sept 14th – 29th. Welcome to the Casbah!

So in yesterday’s post, I showed you some awesome Moroccan furniture, but what I didn’t show was that I’d set is up as a little boutique store called Ceja’s Casbah Chic.  No, I’m not branching out with my own store.  I just felt that the best way to show off this amazing store structure was by actually creating a little store to show its versatility.  The fact that I had this amazing Moroccan furniture and even a Moroccan-style formal dress inspired me to create the Casbah, and thus began one of my most fun sets ever since I began blogging almost two years ago.  I’ll be a bit heartbroken when I dismantle it, but I’ve loved my little casbah while I’ve had it!

Salacity Structures – Baldwin Store.  Talk about versatile!  This is a whole store building, completely ready for you to create your own cute little store space. It’s a beautiful small-to-midsize shop space, crafted in a traditional style with plenty of windows & open space. I’m Ready for My Closeup

OK, I’ll admit it… I’m on a classic movie binge.  There are just so many with lines that are so iconic, they’ve made it into that little book of sayings we all use.  Hopefully, I’m not being quite as pretentious as Norma Desmond (the character in Sunset Boulevard), but I do find that close-ups are always harder than I remember.  At first, I’m always “this will be easy to pull together, it’s just the head” but (and it’s a BIG but) it actually takes just as much if not more prep.  You’re not showing an entire outfit, but SOMETHING always gets into the shot, so you still need to coordinate it all (except shoes… you can get away going barefoot lol).  And let’s face it… if you’re not shooting at home, you need to be dressed and not just running around in your skin.  A beautiful hairstyle may not work well on a closeup… in a case like this one, it can’t block the eye makeup or the earrings, and those hairs that sometimes pop through your ears?  Poses (which you need in order to stand still) create other issues… closeup they may not look natural, or the shoulder looks non-human, or the jewelry goes into your neck or shoulder.  And then there are the eyes… I’d be lost without my eye poser, sitting there waiting for the combination of facial anim and eye position to happen.  I guess if I did it more often, I’d be better at it.  I look at other bloggers/photographers who do head shots all the time, and I marvel at their talent, their ability to capture a moment.  But for me, it’s just part of my “portfolio” and what keeps blogging interesting and fun! I will say that it took a while, but in the end I was definitely ready for my closeup!  😉

So even though we’re just moving into fall, I’m starting to see lots of Halloween stuff.  I’ll admit that it’s giving me a bit of an itch to get started, but I’m holding back until I return from vacation at the end of the month. It IS bringing to mind some of my favorite costumes that I’ve seen over the years, both in RL and here on the grid.  One of my all-time favorites is from the classic Alfred Hitchcock move, The Birds.  Someone dressed up just like Tippi Hedren’s character in the scene where she was attacked by the birds — so she had on very classic clothing with a blonde French twist all messed up, a bird on her head and another on her shoulder, and she did that cringing movement with her hands up to protect against them while putting on a look of horror and fear.  it was absolutely awesome!  Well, I didn’t have the means to recreate it as perfectly as that unknown woman did, so I decided to do a more current reinvention as my personal homage, since to this day every time I see a whole bunch of birds on a tree or on the wires, I think of that movie and get just a wee bit nervous…  It would make a fantastic costume in here though (hint, hint, to any designers out there!)…  😉

I really can’t believe how quickly that nip in the air appeared.  In the space of just a few days I went from wearing shorts and tank tops to jeans, 3/4 sleeves, and even a jacket at certain times of day. The trees have felt it, too, and are just starting to turn.  And although their autumnal color is very beautiful and the fall air is refreshing after the oppressive heat, it’s also bittersweet…  I’ve always found fall to be a little sad. All the beauty of fall is actually a form of death (of course, much of it is reborn in spring, but still).  And although it doesn’t mean as much as it once did, when there was a real break in life between summer and the rest of the year, there’s enough of a holdover from childhood for it to be a bit melancholy.  It’s the time of all the “lasts”… one last summer barbecue, one last swim in the lake, one last bonfire, sometimes it’s one last kiss… whatever your summer is about… whatever made it special to you.  The weatherman says we’ll be back in shorts for a couple of days midweek, but I know that’s just a delaying tactic by mother nature… summer’s end is coming, if not already here… and it’s time for that one lasting look around before it’s gone (at least until next year!)… and to turn around and head into the next season with its own beauty, its own pleasures…  They’re already selling Halloween candy in the RL stores and Halloween costume here on the grid… can pumpkin spice latte be far behind?  😉
