Where has October gone?  It’s just flown by!  All the snowbirds are returning here to Florida (plus lots of brand-new residents fleeing the cold and taxes from elsewhere), and that means everything is getting so much more crowded… but it also means that lots of activities are picking up from a summer hiatus.  I’ve been pushing myself to spend less time inworld and on the computer in general, and more time doing “social” activities (much of which goes against the grain lol, I’m basically quite content being a home-body), but the end result has been less of a “doing so many more fun things” and more of an “OMG I’m so behind in my blogging deadlines”, which is basically the opposite of the overall intention.  Oh well, not all experiments work out the way they’re planned, but that’s what experimentation is all about!  I’m back to needing blogging charts with deadlines and requirements, preliminary choices with initial ideas.  One critical advance, however, is that I DO seem to be making definitive choices earlier in the shoot process, even abandoning entire looks if I just don’t feel it’s all coming together… I still need to relax a bit about faves/awards when a pic is posted — I’ve learned that some of what I consider my best work just doesn’t seem to resonate with others… what matters most to me (or so I keep reminding myself) is that a shoot (or more specifically, what’s coming out of it) makes me smile…  As my very first blogger-manager advised me, you can’t blog for awards and recognition (though they’re definitely very nice to receive)… you need to blog for yourself, to do what YOU want to do to exercise your creative muscle…  Although at the end of the day, I’ll admit that it bothers me when my pix don’t do well…   Enough philosophizing and self-justification!  Now let’s see, requirements are now complete for which sponsors?  And let’s not forget all my weekend shopping!!!!  Who said Sundays were for resting?

So I’m not a huge fan of Halloween.   I just don’t enjoy the horror side of it, and  find some of it way too creepy and unsettling.  That said, some of the items are VERY creative, and I just have to tip my hat to the inventiveness living in some designers’ minds.  So my Halloween has a touch of creepy, but nothing on the genuinely macabre or disturbing side, and you know what? That’s exactly how I like my Halloween!!! (oh, but with candy… Halloween is a great excuse for chocolate, even as an adult!!!)  Happy Halloween season!!!!

Dreamland Designs:   Evil Floating Elephant.  I honestly add some second thoughts about this guy…  he really is quite spooky & more than a little disconcerting.   But since this IS a Halloween scene, spooky is definitely what is called for, & this guy definitely adds a certain something. With big red wings, red all over his horns, splattered with what looks like blood, & with a skeleton hanging on to his trunk, he floats up & down (see the balloons???) & moves around at a decent pace (though you can stop the traveling by clicking on him).  Material enabled, copy-mod, he’s available at a reduced price at the October Designer Outlet.  See the ad below for close-up detail.
Dabble Home & Garden (formerly known as Tylar’s Treasures):  Tylar always makes the BEST stuff for Halloween.  A little tongue in cheek with a very definite sense of style, I’ve featured several of her items into this little scene:
  • Witchy Tree — shown on left.  A seemingly dead tree with lots of activity going on! And the holiday season is off and running!  And that means two very specific things here in Second Life — various types of holiday hunts and fundraisers!  I’m featuring items from two seasonal events in this post.  Boo Bunny Hunt 9 is an Evil Bunny Production filled with fun and great Halloween-themed items from a wide range of designers; OutShop Cancer is dedicated to raising funds to help fight breast cancer.  A huge roster of designers have done their part by creating and donating fabulous items to the cause.  Now it’s your turn, to shop till you drop and work to OutShop Cancer!  Two events that join an already busy roster of ongoing monthly events, with many more to come!  Ready, set, go!!!  Just one small word of advice… avoid graveyards after midnight!!!

Brunch at Tiffany’s

Unless you’re a classic movie buff or “of a certain age” — or both, they’re not mutually exclusive lol! — you may or may not have heard of Audrey Hepburn.  If you haven’t, it would be a real shame, because she was someone really special.  Not just in looks — she had this wide-eyed gamin look about her, very innocent, but oh she could be so sexy if she chose to, and always ALWAYS just oozed class.  She was also a great humanitarian, most notably working for Unicef.  Although my looks are NOTHING like hers, IRL or here on the grid, I always adored her, in the classics My Fair Lady and Sabrina, and in my personal favorite of hers, Charade.  (You can tell I spent some time watching classic movies while recently away at my mom’s lol!)  She always looked fabulous in these big hats (though she usually wore big sunglasses with them), so this is my little “tip of the hat” as it were to Audrey Hepburn as Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany’s and as so many other wonderful characters that will live on in my imagination.

http://Dream OnSo I’m generally not an animal print or animal skin person.  Don’t get me wrong, when done well, they’re awesome… the problem is that IMHO, they’re rarely done well which means they just look, well, tacky.  This is one outfit that is done EXCEPTIONALLY well.  The texture for the crocodile “skin” itself is AMAZING, and on the pants — falling just below the waist and shaped sooooo perfectly especially for a curvy shape like mine — it’s broken up with perfectly placed mesh insets that add interest, draw the eye, and keep it from being “too much”.  The sexy little open-laced top is also an unquestionable winner.  Granted, some of the colors in the included HUD were a little too far out there for me, but even so, they were still extremely well done.  And there were still several more “natural” crocodile colors — like the silver grey I’m wearing — that made this outfit go on my list of total knockouts! Not only that, but it’s an exclusive item for the Out Shop Cancer event, with the designer donating all proceeds to the cause.  You can see a directory of participating stores at the Strides office on ACS Island as well as on the Making Strides Second Life website.  Talk about a win-win! (well, except for the croc!)

Wide Eyed Wonder

It’s amazing how things keep changing and evolving.  Sometimes I just like to stop and think about all the changes and developments I’ve seen here on the grid in my 12 years here.  In fact, this blog post represents a lot of firsts. Number one, it’s my first post using Bakes On Mesh layers (BOM), which now that Firestorm has released a BOM-enabled viewer, will start becoming mainstream as an option to using appliers as more designers and mesh makers jump on board.  I’m lucky that Akeruka (the maker of my primary head) was an early adopter, updating all their deluxe heads — male and female — for BOM.  Although it does offer some interesting options, I wonder how it will impact the world of mesh.  Mesh completely upended the world we knew… will BOM now turn everything back on its head? Time will tell, I suppose; for now, I’m just kicking myself for having tossed all those system tattoos & makeup, but one thing is for certain in SL: there will always be more to buy!  As for first number two: it’s my first post for Out Shop Cancer, the grid-wide and marketplace shopping event benefiting Making Strides and the American Cancer Society.  Starting Oct. 1 and running the entire month, this event will take shoppers across the grid, exploring and shopping at stores in support of Strides. Store-owners will use American Cancer Society breast cancer vendor kiosks to feature special products in their stores. A directory of participating stores will be available at the Strides office on ACS Island as well as on the Making Strides Second Life website.  You can see me there on the list of official bloggers, part of my ongoing effort to use my blogging and try to do some good in the world, and I’m proud to say that the brand for which I’m blogger-manager — Allure Couture — is a participating store as well.  To kick it off, then, it’s only right that I feature one of our outfits where 100% of proceeds go to support the fight against breast cancer.  In light of the enormity of both of those things, my third first is just a little thing, but to me it’s pretty big… it looks like I finally figured out the emails that go out automatically to my email subscribers.  Of course I won’t know until after this is posted, so fingers crossed!
