In case you haven’t noticed, the April round of events is off to a great start! Things may be shut down across the globe IRL, but on the grid, we’re in full swing! I don’t know about you, but I am finding Second Life to be the escape valve that is keeping me sane (well, relatively sane anyway).  This look says it all… taking charge, ready to conquer the world!  And considering how helpless we all are feeling, it’s important to remind ourselves that we ARE still in charge, that we still do have control, over our actions, over what we do to keep ourselves and our loved ones safe.  So have fun in here… be free, roam, party, socialize… and then IRL have more patience to carry on with social distancing and staying home.  BE SAFE OUT THERE!

These are tough days, for those of us with tons of friends but cut off physically from them, and for those of us who live more isolated lives to begin with but still quarantined into little bubbles.  We’re all feeling disconnected in one way or another, trapped. And that feeling comes out in different ways… depression, anger, peevishness.  It’s important to remind ourselves to look beyond the moment, to the motivation, to the root cause… we’re all feeling the pressure, the anxiety, the lack of or at least the change in routine. Remember: this too shall pass.  And at least we — and I mean you and me and the rest of us on the grid — have our virtual lives as a small means of temporary escape to another life where we can still go and do exactly what we did before… see our friends, go dancing, explore, and of course shop our little hearts out. One thing that Second Life has really driven home for me is the global nature of this… of course, I KNEW it from the news, but it’s not quite the same thing as talking to your friend from Germany and another friend who lives in the UK and hearing about how topsy-turvy their lives have been as well.  Let’s just all remember that we are in this TOGETHER.  And that is the end of today’s sermon… just remember to be SAFE OUT THERE.  And enjoy yourself in here!

Have you ever heard the expression “herding cats”?  I’ll never forget the first time I did… my all-time favorite boss, an incredibly smart little firebrand from Texas used it to sum up a meeting, completely confounding me.  Well, I experienced the literal meaning doing this shoot… first I had to wrangle some of my cats over to where the shot was already set up (yes, I’m a crazy cat lady, and have lots of cats milling around), and get them into pose positions.  But then one cat after another would fall asleep and poof! they transported back to their home spot and suddenly there would be a gaping hole in my little tableau.  And one cat managed to break out of pose and just start meandering away, so I needed to herd him back.  So the original 5-cat picture ended up being a 3-cat picture, but I think that’s still enough to highlight what I think are the absolutely adorable kitty design touches on this outfit (which I’ll mention are optional, just in case you’re not into them like I am).  I’ll admit, however, that I am glad that there’s no cat hair included!  Details below… and remember… stay safe out there!

The New Reality

The new reality… that’s what they call it.  I prefer the OLD reality or fantasy, but I guess none of us gets to choose.  Considering how much time I have on my hands, it’s amazing how much difficulty I’m having with my blogging.  With so much emptiness and so many hours to fill, I find it hard to concentrate… not to mention that I’ve been busy developing other distractions — videogames, puzzles, home repairs, and of course lots of reading.  The main issue is that there’s just this underlying worry all the time, stress that just can’t be resolved.  Once it warms up a bit and we can at least sit in the backyard and work in the garden, I think things will improve, but I also think I’m kidding myself and that it will just be more of the same.  Of course, EVERYONE feels it, but I do wonder if that makes it better or worse to have an entire world society locked up in their homes, on edge, worrying about tomorrow.  We all need avatars that can go out there in the real world for us and face the dangers, avatars that can transmit all the feelings, not just the visual and audio but ALL of it… now wouldn’t THAT be something?  Hmmm, I’ll have to daydream about that for a while… Meantime it’s a new month, and all the SL designers are also locked up in their homes worldwide, so they’ve been busy designing simply awesome things, which are now hitting their stores and the the monthly events.  Shopping is, as always, the best therapy!!!!  Keep your eye out for stay-at-home specials… I’ve found a free house, a free head, free clothes, and more…. but the most important thing is to STAY SAFE OUT THERE!!!

I’m definitely not a Biblical nut, but I do have to admit that home confinement feels quite a bit like being sent to my room for misbehavior (though I’m certainly not without my supper!).  But did I misbehave?  Well, I personally have my faults and failures, and I do have to say that as a society, we certainly have not been taking care of our planet.  Perhaps, just perhaps, mother nature is starting to try to teach us our manners.  Yes, I definitely have too much time on my hands to think of far-fetched things, but is it any accident that certain environmental factors have improved during this global pandemic?  It’s logical of course… a lot of production is shut down, there’s no commuting, etc., but perhaps there’s a bigger lesson in all of this, beyond the need to be prepared and to care for our neighbors and our fellow man.  Who knows?  Again, too much time to play mind games and watch scifi movies…  and of course my daily shopping on the grid!  (My shopping IRL has really nose-dived now that Amazon Prime is taking up to a month to deliver!)  Whatever you are up to, especially if you are one of those out there on the front lines fighting for the rest of us, be safe out there!

So the world has gone crazy, and many of us are forced to spend all of our time at home.  Coughing and sneezing and headaches from seasonal allergies are always annoying but now they’re somewhat alarming, causing a full self-examination of symptoms and temperature taking.  The magnolia tree next door has started to bud, which has ALWAYS caused me to have severe allergic reactions, but this year, worry is among them.  On top of all the health issues, my workplace has closed, so I have more time to sit and watch my savings disappear… which is just a delightful exercise in itself especially considering that we were planning on retiring in just a few months.  But what can you do but try to keep yourself and your loved ones safe and roll with the punches?  I will say one thing… it’s a wonderful time to be in Second Life. I’m actually a bit surprised that there hasn’t been a big ad campaign to boost virtual worlds, with so many people worldwide locked in their homes, going stir crazy.  I for one will not be surprised to see a huge influx of newbies running around the grid, doing what we all did as newbies.  As for me, well, in addition to blogging, I’m doing more exploring, more music venues, & definitely more shopping.  LOTS of great events out there, with tons of goodies!  Here are just a few…  Maybe I’ll even finally learn to sail that boat I bought months and months ago! I’ll drink to that!  In the meantime, happy shopping!

Angel of the Morning

I’m not particularly into angels.  Yes I love wings, but even in my fae days (yes, once upon a time many years ago, I played as an elvish-fae hybrid) when I wore wings every day, I never wore angel wings. In fact, when given a choice between being an angel or a devil, I’d have to say I just about always go for the dark side.  But not this time.  Somehow this angel outfit just didn’t hit me as all that angelic, if you get my drift… in fact, it almost seems a bit devilish in that it just exudes temptation.  I found it to be rather inspiring, so much so that rather than just do it the easy way and shoot myself flying or hovering against a cloudy background, I decided to make it much harder, and build a small cloud “set”.   It reminded me of a lesson I’d forgotten of late… I have so much more fun when I do it the hard way, going a bit overboard and doing much more than is necessary in order to approximate the image that’s in my brain…  Well, time to hang up my wings and leave my seat in the clouds…  Happy shopping!
