Well it’s been a rough month for me personally (a rough few months actually), so I’ll admit that I had some difficulty getting into the spirit of Halloween this year.  So even though today is THE day, I’m avoiding horror and opting for high fashion instead, going with a look that just made me go “ooooh” when I first saw it and “aaaah” when I tried it on. It’s definitely not my normal look; in fact, I even had to adjust my body to get the boa to fit properly, but wow I think it was worth it!  And what better place to strut my little dolled-up look than on the streets of Paris? So instead of Happy Halloween, I’ll just say “Ooh la la!” and leave it there! Either way, happy shopping!

Wishes

Wishes. There are so many sayings and so many songs about wishes.  Wishing on a star, wishing and hoping, wishing your life away, blowing out the candles and making a wish, and on and on. And I’ve admittedly made my share of wishes, but the fact is, I honestly believe that for the most part (and yes, you’ll notice I said “for the most part”) you make your own luck.  But I’m mixing things up, because LUCK and WISHES are two totally different things. Some people are just plain lucky; others seem to have little black clouds that follow them everywhere. Karma? Who knows. Maybe I’m just mixing things up even more into one big stew. But wishes?  I think they’re great to make, because they help you focus on what you really want, even if it’s just for the moment. And if it’s what you really really want, you can work towards it. But you know the other saying too… be careful of what you wish for! Because wanting and having are two totally different things. Trick or Treat

So here I was, thinking I was almost all caught up on blogging and would actually be able to make my minimums this month. And then SL decided to act like, well, like SL.  It’s hard to blog when things don’t rez, when skin and makeup don’t apply, when your camera doesn’t function correctly.  FlickR got into the act too with an image not uploading, comments not posting, and one award group that I use a lot just not admitting images to the next level.  That’s when you start questioning if you’re having fun yet lol.  And I couldn’t even birth new kitties or go shopping to make myself feel better, lol, what’s a girl to do? (Seriously, what’s the answer? I could use one, other than go back to real life, which is what I did lol!)  Thankfully, both issues were relatively short-lived, and everything seems back to “normal” (whatever that is).  Now I’m just another photographer-at-work, a bit frantic because we’re approaching end-of-month and I’m wondering how I’m ever going to get it all done lol! And of course on top of all that, it’s Halloween!!!! Definitely trick or treat time! Happy shopping!

With one week to go, we’re getting into the final stretch for Halloween.  I’m just really starting to look around at what’s available, and I have to say, there’s just so much quantity out there in every genre, it can be downright daunting to find the quality items. I have to say that one of my favorite items this year — in fact I believe it will rank among my personal favorites for a long, long time, gracing whatever land I own — is ATTACK OF THE MAN EATING SPIDERS from Tylar’s Treasures.  It’s just such a uniquely creepy item, it’s really cool!  The scene features a bare tree covered in a spiderweb. The ground beneath  the tree is covered in skulls and two whole skeletons.  But what really makes this item come alive is that it has 3 animated spiders — one of the giant ones wanders around the scene (yes, you can set his range!); another giant is attacking a skeleton in the foreground; and a smaller cousin is moving up and down on a web from the tree.  This can be seriously creepy stuff, especially if you get tangled up with the big animated spider… which happened to me the moment I tp’d to the event using the LM below (consider yourself forewarned lol).  Want even more creepiness?  The giant animated spider is copy, so you can have as many giant spiders running around as you can handle before calling for the exterminator!

So I just realized that just like IRL, I wear a lot of black in Second Life.  There’s one major difference, though… I can do a lot more with it here on the grid! Just the ability to change the tone of my hair and skin, not to mention all the fantastic accessories that are available, makes everything pop so much more.  And of course the styles are just so exceedingly more exciting to wear… and not just because I have the body of my dreams, but it sure doesn’t hurt lol!  IRL I’m often struggling to make the clothes I own fit the occasion; it’s rare that I go out and buy something special unless it’s for a really important wedding or something of that nature. It’s often the exact opposite in SL… as a blogger, I’m usually searching for the “scene” to wear my clothes.  But it generally all works out, in both worlds, though admittedly sometimes it’s harder than others… especially IRL! I will say this though: I have so much fun setting up scenes here in Second Life! Take this one for example… the moment I entered this spooky little backdrop, the entry side “closed up” behind me, and all I could hear in my head was Ghostbusters music… from there, it was easy!  After all, in a spooky situation, who you gonna call???  Happy shopping!!!

First off, once you enter, the back “closes” up behind you, so it’s like you’re suddenly in an enclosed room. Spooky, but it also means that you can shoot from any angle without worrying about falling outside the perimeters of the box! Then the ghostly colored lights seep out from under the doors & then mist away; the lights behind the barred door brighten & fade. Truly awesome! Brunch at Tiffany’s

Unless you’re a classic movie buff or “of a certain age” — or both, they’re not mutually exclusive lol! — you may or may not have heard of Audrey Hepburn.  If you haven’t, it would be a real shame, because she was someone really special.  Not just in looks — she had this wide-eyed gamin look about her, very innocent, but oh she could be so sexy if she chose to, and always ALWAYS just oozed class.  She was also a great humanitarian, most notably working for Unicef.  Although my looks are NOTHING like hers, IRL or here on the grid, I always adored her, in the classics My Fair Lady and Sabrina, and in my personal favorite of hers, Charade.  (You can tell I spent some time watching classic movies while recently away at my mom’s lol!)  She always looked fabulous in these big hats (though she usually wore big sunglasses with them), so this is my little “tip of the hat” as it were to Audrey Hepburn as Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany’s and as so many other wonderful characters that will live on in my imagination.

A Fall Bounty for All the Senses

Now that a permanent move to Florida is in the works for me in a year or two’s time, I find that I’m paying even more attention than usual to the seasons.  And although I’ve always KNOWN it, I’m really seeing how so many of the little things that make the fall season special just get lost in all the noise about Halloween.  Don’t get me wrong, I love Halloween, but I also love the crisp bite of the fall air and of the late-season apples (we just went apple-picking yesterday!!!!), the beauty of the red, gold and orange leaves on the trees and the crunch underfoot of those that have fallen, the clarity of the air and the way that mist and fog seem to reach out and beckon in the gloom, the bustle of the squirrels and the cry of the Canadian geese as they both ready themselves for what comes next, the scent of fall treats and comfort foods baking, and so very much more.  It truly is a season of bounty for ALL the senses. That’s why I was thrilled to find among all the awesome horror and Goth items at the current home & garden area of this month’s Swank a beautiful fall deck that, for me, just helps crystallize the glory of this season as I relax and watch the waves.  Check it out, and I think you’ll feel the same way…

Dream On

http://Dream OnSo I’m generally not an animal print or animal skin person.  Don’t get me wrong, when done well, they’re awesome… the problem is that IMHO, they’re rarely done well which means they just look, well, tacky.  This is one outfit that is done EXCEPTIONALLY well.  The texture for the crocodile “skin” itself is AMAZING, and on the pants — falling just below the waist and shaped sooooo perfectly especially for a curvy shape like mine — it’s broken up with perfectly placed mesh insets that add interest, draw the eye, and keep it from being “too much”.  The sexy little open-laced top is also an unquestionable winner.  Granted, some of the colors in the included HUD were a little too far out there for me, but even so, they were still extremely well done.  And there were still several more “natural” crocodile colors — like the silver grey I’m wearing — that made this outfit go on my list of total knockouts! Standing Out on The Family Tree

Like many people, I often felt like I just didn’t fit on the family tree.  I never quite fit the mold, was always a bit different, more of a rebel, more liberal, more creative, just “more” in so many ways.  And yet with the week I just had with my mom, with a fall and a broken arm sending her slip-sliding unbelievably fast into dementia to the point of not recognizing me the other morning, the thought of family and the solidity of roots of a family tree have suddenly become incredibly important to me.  My mom is now safely ensconced in memory care where they can properly care for her, but my heart is broken at the thought that the mom I’ve known and loved is mostly if not totally gone.  I’d happily embrace being the colorful witchy bitch — or is it the bitchy witch? — to have my family back, but that will never be.  The scary fact is that now I’m the matriarch of my own clan… hopefully it will be a strong, fruitful tree that can bend with the storms of life… As my mom always said, life goes on, and it’s up to us to make it special.

Halloween is not just about horror and screams and chills. There’s a whole other side of dressing up in costume, one of beauty, honoring characters and icons that have touched our hearts and minds in one way or another.  This is one of those Halloween outfits.  The second I saw it, I yearned to be able to say “I’m not bad; I’m just drawn that way”, and to toss my long wavy red hair away from my eyes as I sashayed across the floor in a very tight gown with operatic gloves.  It made me laugh, it made me smile, and with what’s been going on in my real life, that’s quite an achievement.  I almost ALMOST modified my body to create a wasp waist and accentuate the effect even further, but I decided that in this gown, I was hourglass enough with my “regular” shape.  Let’s just quote Jessica herself, and say that in wearing this awesome outfit, “You don’t know how hard it is being a woman looking the way I do.”  What’s so awesome is the fact that now you can.
