I have to admit that all of the “stuff” that goes with dealing with my mom’s situation and helping to move her into memory care is exhausting, physically and mentally.  And the fact that I’m far from home, out of my own environment and comfort zone sure doesn’t help.  Sometimes I look in the mirror and I just wonder how we got to this point.  Life has a nasty habit of just sneaking up on you in that way, doesn’t it?  I do have to say that my life here inworld and my blogging has been a true lifeline for me throughout this process.  It’s both given me another focus and provided an escape where I can forget about life for a while… lol, reminds me of that old Calgon commercial, “Calgon, take me away!”  But in my case, it’s Second Life to the rescue!!!

One Life to Live

So I’m away from home again, back in Florida, this time on a family emergency.  My mom (who is quite elderly) fell and broke her arm.  So I flew down to help take care of her. Since it’s become really obvious that she really just can’t handle things any more living on her own, we’re also starting the process of looking for an assisted living facility. It’s really sad that we’re at that stage, but I guess it’s all part of the circle of life. It doesn’t seem like all that long ago that I was still a kid, and I’m sure it won’t seem all that long when the time comes that I’m unable to live on my own either.  That’s just how life is.  All the more reason to live it the way YOU want to, and not the way other people think you should. (Of course it goes without saying as long as you’re not hurting anyone else in the process.) Unlike cats, we only get the one life, although within that life we get to live many lives… child, teenager, lover, spouse, parent, grandparent, senior citizen, and so many others… I’m realizing the importance of making the most of each and every one of them, to own them to the fullest, rather than just surviving… I only get the one life… here’s to life!

It’s funny, but no matter how old I get, I never forget all the little fantasies and fairy tales and stories I’ve read and seen throughout my life.  Little everyday things may suddenly bring one to mind, totally out of the blue.  Like when a bell rings, I might think of Clarence getting his wings in It’s A Wonderful Life.  When someone complains that they have no idea what to pack (including myself lol), I laugh to myself when I remember that the most important thing is a towel (A Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy).  And when I suddenly see a light or a candle brighten in a certain way, I always think of Tinkerbell in Peter Pan.  I know that some people will sneer at this.  But for me, I think that the ability to not only remember but to continue to see magic in the world around me is a gift, one that in today’s world I believe is increasingly valuable.  Of course I know it’s not real; but that doesn’t mean that the thoughts, the possibilities, don’t bring a smile, a lifting of the heart, a lightening of the step, in what can be a heavy, exhausting, depressing world.  And the fact is, magic comes in many forms. There’s magic in a beautiful sunset, in the night sky, in a brisk autumn afternoon, at dusk in the summer as the fireflies gather.  So believe like I believe, or don’t… go ahead and deal with things in your way, and I’ll deal with them in mine. We’ll see who smiles more!

Well, I’m back from vacation and ready to ride!  Had an amazing time, feel refreshed & renewed, made a HUGE life-altering choice (we bought a house!), and am already back at work blogging (though I’m a bit rusty… I accidentally knocked off my freckles and forgot to put them back on!!!!). Singing and Dancing in the Rain

OK, so another classic movie has made it into my blog, this time a musical. You may as well know… I LOVE musicals.  I love to sing and dance to them… and although I’m pretty good at remembering all the words and all the moves, I unfortunately have absolutely zero talent.  Can’t sing a note lol. But I don’t let that stop me, because the fact is I FEEL great when I’m singing and dancing.  If the others around me don’t appreciate it, well, that’s just too bad lol.  Sometimes when it rains, when I’m in exactly the right mood, I hear that da-da-da-dum, da-da-da-da-da-da dum in my head, and I just can’t help it.  (If you know the movie, you’ll know what I’m talking about; if you don’t, shrugs.)  I’ll even admit that once, many years ago when I was in college and it was lightly raining when I left for a midnight astronomy lab, I actually sang and danced in the rain just like Gene Kelly.  Ok, ok, so it wasn’t “just like”, but it felt fabulous, and I’ve never ever forgotten it, even after all these years!  So let this pic be my little homage to one of my all-time favorite old-style classic musicals. And who knows, maybe we’ll both be dancing the next time it rains!  😉

I’m Ready for My Closeup

OK, I’ll admit it… I’m on a classic movie binge.  There are just so many with lines that are so iconic, they’ve made it into that little book of sayings we all use.  Hopefully, I’m not being quite as pretentious as Norma Desmond (the character in Sunset Boulevard), but I do find that close-ups are always harder than I remember.  At first, I’m always “this will be easy to pull together, it’s just the head” but (and it’s a BIG but) it actually takes just as much if not more prep.  You’re not showing an entire outfit, but SOMETHING always gets into the shot, so you still need to coordinate it all (except shoes… you can get away going barefoot lol).  And let’s face it… if you’re not shooting at home, you need to be dressed and not just running around in your skin.  A beautiful hairstyle may not work well on a closeup… in a case like this one, it can’t block the eye makeup or the earrings, and those hairs that sometimes pop through your ears?  Poses (which you need in order to stand still) create other issues… closeup they may not look natural, or the shoulder looks non-human, or the jewelry goes into your neck or shoulder.  And then there are the eyes… I’d be lost without my eye poser, sitting there waiting for the combination of facial anim and eye position to happen.  I guess if I did it more often, I’d be better at it.  I look at other bloggers/photographers who do head shots all the time, and I marvel at their talent, their ability to capture a moment.  But for me, it’s just part of my “portfolio” and what keeps blogging interesting and fun! I will say that it took a while, but in the end I was definitely ready for my closeup!  😉

Bodega Bay, Revisited

So even though we’re just moving into fall, I’m starting to see lots of Halloween stuff.  I’ll admit that it’s giving me a bit of an itch to get started, but I’m holding back until I return from vacation at the end of the month. It IS bringing to mind some of my favorite costumes that I’ve seen over the years, both in RL and here on the grid.  One of my all-time favorites is from the classic Alfred Hitchcock move, The Birds.  Someone dressed up just like Tippi Hedren’s character in the scene where she was attacked by the birds — so she had on very classic clothing with a blonde French twist all messed up, a bird on her head and another on her shoulder, and she did that cringing movement with her hands up to protect against them while putting on a look of horror and fear.  it was absolutely awesome!  Well, I didn’t have the means to recreate it as perfectly as that unknown woman did, so I decided to do a more current reinvention as my personal homage, since to this day every time I see a whole bunch of birds on a tree or on the wires, I think of that movie and get just a wee bit nervous…  It would make a fantastic costume in here though (hint, hint, to any designers out there!)…  😉

Listening to A Summer Song

I really can’t believe how quickly that nip in the air appeared.  In the space of just a few days I went from wearing shorts and tank tops to jeans, 3/4 sleeves, and even a jacket at certain times of day. The trees have felt it, too, and are just starting to turn.  And although their autumnal color is very beautiful and the fall air is refreshing after the oppressive heat, it’s also bittersweet…  I’ve always found fall to be a little sad. All the beauty of fall is actually a form of death (of course, much of it is reborn in spring, but still).  And although it doesn’t mean as much as it once did, when there was a real break in life between summer and the rest of the year, there’s enough of a holdover from childhood for it to be a bit melancholy.  It’s the time of all the “lasts”… one last summer barbecue, one last swim in the lake, one last bonfire, sometimes it’s one last kiss… whatever your summer is about… whatever made it special to you.  The weatherman says we’ll be back in shorts for a couple of days midweek, but I know that’s just a delaying tactic by mother nature… summer’s end is coming, if not already here… and it’s time for that one lasting look around before it’s gone (at least until next year!)… and to turn around and head into the next season with its own beauty, its own pleasures…  They’re already selling Halloween candy in the RL stores and Halloween costume here on the grid… can pumpkin spice latte be far behind?  😉

That is definitely one of THE most memorable lines ever!  One of my favorites from an oldtime classic movie (in case you don’t know, it’s from All About Eve). I just love going all Bette Davis in attitude — at least here in SL, not so much in real life… I just can’t carry it off lol — kind of a “caustic sophisticate” as my BFF here in SL put it.  This dress just called for it all… martinis (offscreen, already imbibed), cigarettes, and of course, the sultry attitude; I’ll leave the throaty delivery of the line up to your imagination.  😉

  • Dress:  !!smesh – NEW! Celia.  Honestly, I think this dress is misnamed… IMHO it should be Bette or Margo (the character who said the line), all the way!  It’s the epitome of the perfect little black dress that just exudes sultriness.  Prefer to be the lady in red?  The HUD gives you the option to change the top, the skirt, and/or the included stilettos.  And if you want to kick the sexy up even more, you can adjust the sheer in the skirt.
