So I’m not a huge fan of Halloween.   I just don’t enjoy the horror side of it, and  find some of it way too creepy and unsettling.  That said, some of the items are VERY creative, and I just have to tip my hat to the inventiveness living in some designers’ minds.  So my Halloween has a touch of creepy, but nothing on the genuinely macabre or disturbing side, and you know what? That’s exactly how I like my Halloween!!! (oh, but with candy… Halloween is a great excuse for chocolate, even as an adult!!!)  Happy Halloween season!!!!

Dreamland Designs:   Evil Floating Elephant.  I honestly add some second thoughts about this guy…  he really is quite spooky & more than a little disconcerting.   But since this IS a Halloween scene, spooky is definitely what is called for, & this guy definitely adds a certain something. With big red wings, red all over his horns, splattered with what looks like blood, & with a skeleton hanging on to his trunk, he floats up & down (see the balloons???) & moves around at a decent pace (though you can stop the traveling by clicking on him).  Material enabled, copy-mod, he’s available at a reduced price at the October Designer Outlet.  See the ad below for close-up detail.
Dabble Home & Garden (formerly known as Tylar’s Treasures):  Tylar always makes the BEST stuff for Halloween.  A little tongue in cheek with a very definite sense of style, I’ve featured several of her items into this little scene:

Feelin’ Good!

So I don’t know about you, but sometimes I’m completely blown away by certain pics  I see on FlickR.  Yes, there are plenty of good and some even really good shots amidst a lot of what I consider mediocre shots at best, but there are also true gems that completely floor me.  Those pics make me totally stop and look and try to figure out exactly what it is that grabs me and makes me say “wow” so that maybe, just maybe, I can learn something new.  Now sometimes it just comes down to the photographer’s eye, and I hate to say it but that’s one of those things you either have or you don’t.  Yes, hard work and practice will improve your eye, but that basic sense of the absolutely most perfect perspective and framing, well IMHO those abilities can be finer tuned but simply can not be taught.  In other pics though, it’s a definite sense of technique, a lot of which is applied in edit.  Now some of that I can figure out WHAT they did if not HOW, but since I use Corel and not Photo Shop, I can only try so far to teach myself.  But there’s always been other things that I just knew were being done inworld and I had absolutely no idea how to even attempt them.  Well I just watched a video on photography through Second Life University of all things, and just in minor playing around I can see that (hopefully anyway) I’ll be able to do a lot with this.  If nothing else, I discovered much simpler ways of doing what I already do in setting up my shots and playing with angles, so it could be a huge time and frustration saver.  I also learned to be very very careful about changing ANY settings, even the most innocuous seeming, without writing down what I had before and exactly what I did because I just spent an inordinate amount of time trying to get out of some weird perspective issue that I somehow locked myself into.  Lesson learned!!!  Now to move on to playing with some of what I’ve seen… I hope to be able to share some improved results in the near future!!! http://The remains of the day (beach style)One of my favorite times of day is late in the day.  If I’m at a public beach (as I normally am, since I don’t have beach where I live), it’s after the crowds have all gone home or back to their hotel rooms or whatever, and I’m just wanting to read “just one more chapter”, many times in a row.  The shadows are lengthening, the waves have subsided as the tide goes out, it’s quiet and peaceful…  There’s the memory of the day softly fading, and the promise of tomorrow… perfect for some quiet moments of reflection… Now there are no crowds at my little personal stretch of sand here in SL, but somehow the feeling at the end of the day is still the same… and now I have the perfect little spot from which to sit, relax, enjoy and reflect…

It’s definitely summertime, and I’m getting the beach blues.  I may live in Florida, but I’m right in the middle of the state, no beach bum life for me!  Yes, I’ve got the sun, but right now I’m craving some sand and surf to go with it…  I’ll definitely have to create at least a day trip in the very near future (more is always a bit more difficult when you have a house full of pets lol), but for now I guess I’ll be taking my avatar off for some needed beach time… the problem I keep running into is that the beaches I keep finding tend to be more of the nude beach variety… not my style, I’m a fashion blogger after all!  Oh well, there’s a downside to everything, even on  the grid! Lilacs for Remembrance

I’m an avid reader of fiction, all genres.  A book that even as a pretty light read has always lingered in the back of my mind was about the language of flowers.  Purple is my favorite color IRL, and I just adore the scent of lilacs, so naturally enough purple lilacs are one of my favorite flowers.  What I find extremely interesting in that (according to Google anyway), the purple lilac is also “a very spiritually symbolic flower. Both reflective and inward-looking, the purple lilac is considered a connection to the spiritual world.”  How fitting, both with respect to the Memorial Day Weekend here in the US and the horror of the school shooting preceding it…

New Year’s is almost here, and not a moment too soon! It’s Time to Give Thanks

The night before Thanksgiving… I’m exhausted, my back aches, my feet are throbbing.  We’ve been hosting for decades, and although it’s gotten easier in some ways, in others it’s always as overwhelming as ever.  This is the first time hosting in our new home (well we did it last year, but we’d just moved in and it was only four of us, so it kind of didn’t count).  That means that a lot of the old ways of doing things just don’t work any more, necessitating a lot more “figuring it out” rather than following the tried and true… creating added stress.  That said, I want to acknowledge how very much I have to be thankful for…  yes, it’s been a tough year, my mom’s severe decline and subsequent death were a large part of that, as have several health issues.  I’m still sitting here waiting for some potentially serious results; my husband has surgery coming up in January.  But we love our new home, we’ve made some wonderful friends (some of whom are coming tomorrow!), and we’re both keeping active and busy (modified by the aforementioned health issues, but what can you do).  I know that we’re in much better shape than so many others, and I am truly thankful for all that we have and all we enjoy.  We try to give back, and will continue to look for new ways in which to do that.  But for now, it’s time to put my feet up… still hours of cooking and cleaning and setting up to look forward to tomorrow.  But Turkey Day is my favorite holiday, so the aches and pains feel good in a strange way, since they are all for the best cause in the world — friends and family.  Happy Thanksgiving to all!!!!

The Storm is Over

Well, the problems persist on my website.  As I thought, everyone is pointing the finger at everyone else, and meanwhile I’m left with a nonfunctioning blog.  But at least the pix are on FlickR, and the story is there in the blog, even if the pic can’t always be seen there.  Hopefully, someone will figure it out, because it’s certainly technically beyond my skill.  While I wait, I decided to redo my avatar (yes, again!!!)… new body, new skin since I thought it was time to “put my tan away” (did NOT change my head, love my head).  Absolutely LOVING the look.  And the ease of this new body (Legacy) cannot be overstated!  When something isn’t made “in my size”, I no longer have to change bodies or spend ages trying to make it work… now I just use “deformers” and it seems to work fine (yes, I’m still adding that disclaimer since I’ve had the body only a few days and certainly haven’t put it through an exhaustive test).  Bottom line, even though the weather for my blog isn’t perfect, I’m going to say the storm is over… if I never have totally clear skies again, well, I’ll deal with that once everyone throws their hands up and says they can’t fix it.  Maybe I move to another host?
