En Garde!

It’s rare that someone asks, but I notice the looks when I stroll into a strange sim. As a child of what was at the time a somewhat shocking union between elf and fae, you’d think I’d be used to the subtlety of raised eyebrows and the directness of outright stares. But in these more modern days, it’s my warrior attire and attitude that seems to draw the more immediate reaction. It’s sad that even today most people seem to prefer their fantasy folk in either dreamy silks that show a lot of skin or more formal medieval wear that covers it all up (both of which I love to wear on the right occasions)… warrior garb is still cause for those ongoing second looks. Sometimes I can even hear the unspoken thoughts about whether I’m just dressing the part or if I have the skill to wield my weapons with expertise. And believe me, I understand those doubts. Even today, it isn’t easy for a female to become a warrior. And growing up as an outsider, not really belonging to any one clan, I was included in the basic training given to all so that I could help defend when necessary. But true warrior training was denied me, so it was something I had to develop the hard way (not that there IS an easy way!), watching, teaching myself, training independently for hours and hours, learning from anyone willing to teach me, whether it be as a lesson to warn me off or to truly help me hone my skills. So yes, I understand those looks, but mixed in with the hostility and the indifference I am also beginning to note some looks of admiration when a practiced eye notes the ease with which I both carry and wield my weapons, how they are truly extensions of my body. So as I continue to hone my skills, I’m also learning to hold my head up just a little bit higher, to meet those doubting eyes with confidence and ease, ready to defend. En garde!

Sighs, my wings are drooping, I’m so tired from all the holiday shopping… the “standard” weekend sales are often exhausting, but all these Black Friday sales??? Not to mention that SL had to throw it’s own brand of action into the mix, making it extremely sloooooooow to attach/detach anything, so trying on demos (which is a must, since no amount of fairy dust will fix something that just doesn’t work on my head, my body, my shape, and so on). I’m just going to sit pretty for a bit, relax and unwind with a bit of nature and some furry friends to replenish my spirit and my strength. Mother of Dragons

No, I’m not trying to be Daenerys Targaryen, but let’s face it… she’s a pretty impressive role model. (Ok, she went a little crazy there at the end, but let’s just focus on the positive, shall we?). I see myself as more of a “Defender of Dragons”, allowing these magnificent creatures a small but private space of their own on my land to grow and flourish in peace. Once, many years ago in my previous lifetime, I had a circling dragon up above my land who nested at top of my waterfall, but he flew off to search for a new home and a new destiny during my long absence. Perhaps this little one will grow up to take his place, only time will tell. Or — as a flight of pure fantasy — perhaps he could be trained to search the grid for fabulous fashion fantasy finds (try saying that 5 times fast!!!)! Well, until that day, I’m on my own… but since I’m good at sharing, here’s what I’ve found! Happy shopping!

Patrolling the Water Hole

I need to admit that sometimes lately I’m getting very confused about who I am. Once upon a time, my backstory was very solid, and I was very sure about my place, my role as it were, here on the grid. I dressed and acted to fit my role. But as I embarked on my life as a blogger, I started experimenting with more looks, more roles. There’s the pure fae, the princess, the goddess/priestess, the warrior… most with a medieval tonality but not all… I don’t just change my clothes or hair or whatever… I put together a “look”, creating a new story, and And it feels so very right… until it’s time to move on. There’s always some reluctance, a small tug of sadness when it’s time to take off a persona, fold it up and put it away on the shelf. But as that next new look takes form, almost every single time I once again get to exult in that feeling of “this is it… this is me!” I’ve come to realize that they’re all just facets of my hybrid fae/elven personality… but oh, my self-identity does teeter and totter. It’s not quite an identity crisis, but it does take a bit to reorient myself. Does some of the princess carry over into the warrior? And does the heart of the warrior beat under the royal finery? Yes to both… I’m a warrior princess, building my new backstory look by look… working out the intricacies of who I am, bit by bit. But even a somewhat confused warrior princess has patrol duty… with plenty of time to think! May the blessings of the fairies guide us both!!!!

The Viking Way

Vikings… who knew they were so popular a culture here in Second Life? Maybe it’s something new, but in all my years fluttering around the grid, I’d never once stumbled onto it. Suddenly I’m seeing outfits, poses, complete avatars, decor & more. So I dressed the part and went exploring the Viking side of life… the list that came up in search was huge (although admittedly quite a bit of it was from the sexual underbelly of SL, but then that’s true of so many search terms). Instead I opted to visit the role-playing & themed communities, properly armed in case winged fantasy folk were unwelcome. As a side note, unless you’ve been here many many years, you may not have run across the “Humans Only” signs at music venues and clubs or been subjected to the taunts, or being shunned from some RPG communities for not exactly fitting their mold; before even my time began, furries — who used to be much more plentiful — were “hunted”. Although creativity still abounds (the recent Fantasy Faire is a prime example!), the world here and its residents used to be much more varied and interwoven… now it’s a much more segregated existence, with many of those who prefer what I’ll term “alt lifestyles” restricting those identities to the RPG areas. It’s kind of sad, really… the diversity added so much IMHO. Although pointed ears have become “a thing” of late, I do draw some strange reactions when mixing with large numbers of humans at stores or events or playing cards. Thankfully, I can’t hear the whispers! But back to the Vikings!!! In my short travels (and they were quite short), I only ran into one Viking… and he was quite polite, asking if I needed assistance when I was just standing there in various armed stances doing a photo shoot. But based on what I saw, it does seem to be a growing community with lots of options… definitely more to explore!!! And in your own explorations, may you be inspired with lightheartedness and laughter, and leave a little sparkle wherever you go!

Preparing for Fantasy Faire 2021

I guess you could say that I owe my life to Fantasy Faire. I had fallen into a deep dreamless slumber years ago according to the calendar in that strange world of real life. Then suddenly there were tendrils of consciousness leaking into the darkness, whispers about the Fantasy Faire, and blogging. I re-awoke to a new reality, one where I had been totally reborn and recreated afresh with a fantastic new look called mesh. And here it is a whole year later, happily blogging about fashion and home & garden in the world of SL fantasy, and now thrilled to the very tips of my wings that I am once again an official blogger for the Fantasy Faire.

A truly exceptional event that only happens once a year, the Fantasy Faire is the epitome of fantasy in Second Life. There are fabulous shopping finds and music events; it’s a Relay for Life event so the purchase of many many items goes towards the truly worthwhile cause of fighting cancer; there’s questing and parties and auctions and so much more. But to this fae, what makes the Fantasy Faire so truly exceptional is the faire itself, and by that I mean the regions. This year there are 21 regions (21!!! OMG!!!), 15 shopping regions plus 6 “special” ones. And one thing I can guarantee you is that all 21 are totally unique creations that offer their own individual experience. Each region has a different sponsor, and each and every one of them creates a totally unique theme for their region… the sheer creativity behind the design for each one is breathtaking! I’ve had the chance to quickly tour the lands before the official opening, and I have to say that my wings are exhausted from beating so much in joy and wonder as I flitted from region to region, just trying to take in a tiny bit of the dreams on display. I simply cannot wait to explore it all in greater detail, and I promise that this is just the first of many blogs to feature items available at the Faire, and many will also feature settings from the Faire as well (how could I possibly resist????). The Faire opens in just 4 more hours on the 22nd… this is an event that all can appreciate, fantasy folk and human… you can read all about it HERE.

These aren’t new per se; both the Metal Satyr & the Crystal Satyr Horns (also at the Faire!) are among my very favorite horns. They might be updated, but they are so phenomenal I really don’t know how they could be improved! A Secret Cave of Wonder

For a somewhat chatty person, today I find that I have absolutely nothing that I want to share. It’s that time of the month where I’m spending a lot of time unpacking blogger boxes, sorting, experimenting… it’s all a bit exhausting and confusing, especially when it’s divided between two different avatars. On top of more “work” here inworld, my real life has been a bit more tiring than usual as well, since my husband overdid the activity a bit and is gimping around the house (barely!). That means I’m now doing his share of the dog walks, taking over the cooking, and yesterday I chauffeured him around to urgent care centers, the pharmacy, etc. If I’m honest, though, the biggest source of my stress is that I’ve started my diet/fitness program, (NOOM!), and I think I’ve been overdoing it, not just physically but depriving myself of calories. I need to be smarter about it, or I won’t succeed, because as we all know, deprivation just doesn’t work and is definitely NOT the key to happiness! Sighs, I much prefer living in my fantasy world, where all I need to do is play with my sliders lol! Though I’m starting to consider I might need to go on a shopping diet inworld, but there’s just so many talented designers with absolutely marvelous creations… how can I resist temptation? And on that note, happy shopping!

Scene: Swank & Co. – Secret Island Cave Hideaway. I’m not sure if it’s my photographic abilities that are lacking, but I found it impossible to capture the magical beauty of this amazing cave. And it’s a true cave… a rocky dome with a hidden entrance that opens/closes at a simple touch. The door opens to wonder, because inside is a magical hideaway bursting with colorful flowers, trees, butterflies, a waterfall cascading into a sparkling pond on which floats a raft filled with animations; even the walls have a colorful hue… it’s absolutely gorgeous! Enchanted Fantasy

Even after almost 14 years here in Second Life, I have to say that the creativity of SL designers continues to amaze and delight me. IMHO, it is most powerful when it comes to fantasy, where imagination comes into play as much as design sense, taste, and attention to detail. I’m thinking that this might be a large part of why I’m finding myself so drawn to the fantasy side of things these days. There are not as many designers, true, but there are definitely those that outdo themselves on ALL fronts. And I’m continually thrilled to be able to share just a few of my favorites as I continue to explore the worlds of imagination on display here on the grid…

Mystical Warrior

Brrr, it may be sunny here in Florida but it’s in the 30s! I’ve had to drag out some of my winter wear lol… certainly not what I expected! But I have to admit that it makes me appreciate blogging fantasy even more. I mean, yes, SL by itself is somewhat of an escape, but when I’m doing fantasy? For example, to do this post I ended up exploring and shooting in Greenhaven, a role-playing sim. I’m minding my own business, wandering around, then doing a shoot, when first I am welcomed by who turns out to be the owner of the Greenhaven sims. Lovely conversation, and I continue to shoot, only to be confronted a short time later by a pair of “watchers” who are guarding the caverns nearby. Granted, I was in a rather challenging pose, but still I was quite thankful that I’ve done enough medieval role play as a fae to understand the proper forms of address, and have a ready backstory so that I was able to not only get them to sheath their swords but to welcome me to their lands. Never a dull moment!!! And I must admit, so much fun that it has made me once again consider the pros of joining one of the many roleplaying communities that abound on the grid. I certainly have the look when there are such fabulous finds as this!!! Happy shopping!

I’ve blogged the new Chelsea head before… I think she is absolutely stunning straight out of the box, but customized her just enough to be a bit different & was thrilled… BUT didn’t truly discover all of her potential until I added the phenomenal elf ears & styled her for fantasy… Let’s just say that my fae look is finally done! I really can’t say enough about these ears… because they are designed by LOGO for LOGO heads, they fit seamlessly at all times into the head (see the closeup below). In two sizes with a HUD to customize chains, gems, & even the ear tattoos, they would easily be among the best I’ve ever worn, but the truly spectacular feature of these ears that kicks them up even another level is that they have a special AO of their own. In the ancient Egyptian religion, Horus was a god who was often depicted as a falcon or as a man with a falcon head, whose right eye was the sun and whose left eye was the moon. He was believed to be the god of war and the sky, and his importance grew until he eventually became the most revered god in ancient Egypt. He is probably most well-known as the protector of the ruler of Egypt. The Pharaohs were intimately connected with Horus, and often an image of Horus was carved above the doors of the Pharaohs’ palaces. It’s not really a stretch of the imagination to think that nomadic tribes might seize upon this mythology to create their own apparel… just look at how the American Indians incorporated their own mythology into ceremonial wear. I (of course) have given even a step further, adding wings and horns since those are a part of who I am as a character, but all elements can be used separately or in any combination, making them the perfect addition to any fantasy wardrobe.
