Well, I’m back from vacation and ready to ride!  Had an amazing time, feel refreshed & renewed, made a HUGE life-altering choice (we bought a house!), and am already back at work blogging (though I’m a bit rusty… I accidentally knocked off my freckles and forgot to put them back on!!!!). What’s nice about taking a vacation is that even a little break makes what was starting to feel a bit like a chore is now fun again… You’ll be seeing lots of new things going forward as I’ve added some new sponsors over the past weeks, and will definitely be blogging for various seasonal, fund-raising events throughout the fall and winter.  Can’t wait to see what all the designers create, and what I come up with to show them off!  And of course it’s fall, my favorite season, so lots of fun ahead! OK, so another classic movie has made it into my blog, this time a musical. You may as well know… I LOVE musicals.  I love to sing and dance to them… and although I’m pretty good at remembering all the words and all the moves, I unfortunately have absolutely zero talent.  Can’t sing a note lol. But I don’t let that stop me, because the fact is I FEEL great when I’m singing and dancing.  If the others around me don’t appreciate it, well, that’s just too bad lol.  Sometimes when it rains, when I’m in exactly the right mood, I hear that da-da-da-dum, da-da-da-da-da-da dum in my head, and I just can’t help it.  (If you know the movie, you’ll know what I’m talking about; if you don’t, shrugs.)  I’ll even admit that once, many years ago when I was in college and it was lightly raining when I left for a midnight astronomy lab, I actually sang and danced in the rain just like Gene Kelly.  Ok, ok, so it wasn’t “just like”, but it felt fabulous, and I’ve never ever forgotten it, even after all these years!  So let this pic be my little homage to one of my all-time favorite old-style classic musicals. And who knows, maybe we’ll both be dancing the next time it rains!  😉

A Little Time Out

So here I am in the final countdown for my vacation (I leave on Thursday), and I break my little toe.  I have SOOOO much to get done! It’s a busy week at work, I have to clean up, do laundry, pack, not to mention all the blogging I need to try to get done before I go.  And here I am, with a lot of pain (it’s amazing how much a little toe can hurt!) and hobbling around… and hobbling very slowly at that.  I broke it earlier today, so hopefully it will be better and I’ll be better at dealing with it before we leave.  I have plans for lots of walking around and playing golf!!!!  Though I’ll probably head over to an Urgent Care tomorrow, to see what they can do (probably nothing other than tape it).  Send me healing energy, please!  But wow, really makes you think about all the people in the world who don’t have ready access to medical care, even for the really big things, not just little annoyances like broken toes.  Brings to home why I’m blogging for the Spoonful of Sugar Festival, a fundraising event for Doctors without Borders, Sept 14th – 29th. Welcome to the Casbah!

So in yesterday’s post, I showed you some awesome Moroccan furniture, but what I didn’t show was that I’d set is up as a little boutique store called Ceja’s Casbah Chic.  No, I’m not branching out with my own store.  I just felt that the best way to show off this amazing store structure was by actually creating a little store to show its versatility.  The fact that I had this amazing Moroccan furniture and even a Moroccan-style formal dress inspired me to create the Casbah, and thus began one of my most fun sets ever since I began blogging almost two years ago.  I’ll be a bit heartbroken when I dismantle it, but I’ve loved my little casbah while I’ve had it!

Salacity Structures – Baldwin Store.  Talk about versatile!  This is a whole store building, completely ready for you to create your own cute little store space. It’s a beautiful small-to-midsize shop space, crafted in a traditional style with plenty of windows & open space. Choose from a blue or green metal awning out front (both are in the package), create your signage simply by dragging a banner onto one of the four texture-ready signs included in the package (two different styles, each in two sizes), place it where you want, & you’re ready to start decorating & laying out your wares! A Spoonful of Sugar… Moroccan Style!

Even after 18 years, I find the week of 9/11 to be a reflective one.  In addition to remembering the horror and tragedy of it all, one of the things I always think about are first responders.  They are the heroes of that day, those that perished and those that survived, and of so many other days as well.  I think about other heroes too, not only the first responders to an emergency, but also all those people who go out of their to do for others.  I count the organization Doctors Without Borders (Médecins Sans Frontières or MSF) among those heroes… as an international, independent, medical humanitarian organization, they deliver emergency aid to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, natural disasters and exclusion from healthcare.  MSF offers assistance to people based on need, irrespective of race, religion, gender or political affiliation.  In other words, they go out of their way to make a difference for those who need their care.  And to me, that’s the definition of being a hero.  I support them in real life; maybe you do too.  But did you know that there’s a way to support this incredible organization here on the grid as well?

The Spoonful Of Sugar Festival has won awards, and has grown to be well known and celebrated as an SL Charity event.  In four events it has raised $40,000 USD for MSF/Doctors Without Borders; with this event, they are projected to hit $50,000 USD.  It truly is a festival, a celebration of a global-wide response to humanity, and its success has shown that here in Second Life we see the right to physical and mental health care on a global scale, and that we don’t take human injustice lightly or miss a chance to help where we can.  The festival is a “Fashion, Home & Garden, Breedable and Entertainment Event, bringing 200 of Second Life’s finest designers, entertainers and participants to an area covering six regions.  I’m trying to do my small part in blogging the event raising money for this wonderful cause, with details on my first two designers below.  Join us for what is being called the “Sweetest Fund Raiser in SL”, The 2019 Spoonful Of Sugar Festival to benefit MSF/Doctors Without Borders.  Open Sept 14th through 29th. I’m Ready for My Closeup

OK, I’ll admit it… I’m on a classic movie binge.  There are just so many with lines that are so iconic, they’ve made it into that little book of sayings we all use.  Hopefully, I’m not being quite as pretentious as Norma Desmond (the character in Sunset Boulevard), but I do find that close-ups are always harder than I remember.  At first, I’m always “this will be easy to pull together, it’s just the head” but (and it’s a BIG but) it actually takes just as much if not more prep.  You’re not showing an entire outfit, but SOMETHING always gets into the shot, so you still need to coordinate it all (except shoes… you can get away going barefoot lol).  And let’s face it… if you’re not shooting at home, you need to be dressed and not just running around in your skin.  A beautiful hairstyle may not work well on a closeup… in a case like this one, it can’t block the eye makeup or the earrings, and those hairs that sometimes pop through your ears?  Poses (which you need in order to stand still) create other issues… closeup they may not look natural, or the shoulder looks non-human, or the jewelry goes into your neck or shoulder.  And then there are the eyes… I’d be lost without my eye poser, sitting there waiting for the combination of facial anim and eye position to happen.  I guess if I did it more often, I’d be better at it.  I look at other bloggers/photographers who do head shots all the time, and I marvel at their talent, their ability to capture a moment.  But for me, it’s just part of my “portfolio” and what keeps blogging interesting and fun! I will say that it took a while, but in the end I was definitely ready for my closeup!  😉

Bodega Bay, Revisited

So even though we’re just moving into fall, I’m starting to see lots of Halloween stuff.  I’ll admit that it’s giving me a bit of an itch to get started, but I’m holding back until I return from vacation at the end of the month. It IS bringing to mind some of my favorite costumes that I’ve seen over the years, both in RL and here on the grid.  One of my all-time favorites is from the classic Alfred Hitchcock move, The Birds.  Someone dressed up just like Tippi Hedren’s character in the scene where she was attacked by the birds — so she had on very classic clothing with a blonde French twist all messed up, a bird on her head and another on her shoulder, and she did that cringing movement with her hands up to protect against them while putting on a look of horror and fear.  it was absolutely awesome!  Well, I didn’t have the means to recreate it as perfectly as that unknown woman did, so I decided to do a more current reinvention as my personal homage, since to this day every time I see a whole bunch of birds on a tree or on the wires, I think of that movie and get just a wee bit nervous…  It would make a fantastic costume in here though (hint, hint, to any designers out there!)…  😉

Listening to A Summer Song

I really can’t believe how quickly that nip in the air appeared.  In the space of just a few days I went from wearing shorts and tank tops to jeans, 3/4 sleeves, and even a jacket at certain times of day. The trees have felt it, too, and are just starting to turn.  And although their autumnal color is very beautiful and the fall air is refreshing after the oppressive heat, it’s also bittersweet…  I’ve always found fall to be a little sad. All the beauty of fall is actually a form of death (of course, much of it is reborn in spring, but still).  And although it doesn’t mean as much as it once did, when there was a real break in life between summer and the rest of the year, there’s enough of a holdover from childhood for it to be a bit melancholy.  It’s the time of all the “lasts”… one last summer barbecue, one last swim in the lake, one last bonfire, sometimes it’s one last kiss… whatever your summer is about… whatever made it special to you.  The weatherman says we’ll be back in shorts for a couple of days midweek, but I know that’s just a delaying tactic by mother nature… summer’s end is coming, if not already here… and it’s time for that one lasting look around before it’s gone (at least until next year!)… and to turn around and head into the next season with its own beauty, its own pleasures…  They’re already selling Halloween candy in the RL stores and Halloween costume here on the grid… can pumpkin spice latte be far behind?  😉

That is definitely one of THE most memorable lines ever!  One of my favorites from an oldtime classic movie (in case you don’t know, it’s from All About Eve). I just love going all Bette Davis in attitude — at least here in SL, not so much in real life… I just can’t carry it off lol — kind of a “caustic sophisticate” as my BFF here in SL put it.  This dress just called for it all… martinis (offscreen, already imbibed), cigarettes, and of course, the sultry attitude; I’ll leave the throaty delivery of the line up to your imagination.  😉

  • Dress:  !!smesh – NEW! Celia.  Honestly, I think this dress is misnamed… IMHO it should be Bette or Margo (the character who said the line), all the way!  It’s the epitome of the perfect little black dress that just exudes sultriness.  Prefer to be the lady in red?  The HUD gives you the option to change the top, the skirt, and/or the included stilettos.  And if you want to kick the sexy up even more, you can adjust the sheer in the skirt. Once Upon A Time

Once upon a time, many vibrant subcultures lived in a wonderful virtual world called Second Life. Fairy folk and elves had land stretching across many sims, filled with art, song and creativity.  After dressing as fae and elf one Halloween and finding pure joy, Ceja and her partner decided to leave the human world behind. They created fantasy alts, and together as fae and elven prince they built a home in a marvelous treehouse near an open sea. Their home was a joyous one, full of color and fantastical flora and fauna.  But the time came when the elves and their kin departed SL for other words and the elven prince often had to travel to faraway lands on business.  What had been a rich and varied life became one of loneliness.  The two decided to return to living as human, and found that after such a long absence, it was once again fresh and exciting. Soon their fantasy lives faded into memory.  Life went on.  Then suddenly, a dragon appeared. His beating wings and breaths of fire rekindled those lost dreams and fantasies, and Ceja couldn’t resist building a glen for the dragon, full of the colors and richness that her elven home once held.  The road ahead is unclear… but for right now, it’s simply wondrous to have a touch of fantasy brought back, even if just for a little while…

THE SCENE

Just about everything you see is from TYLAR’S TREASURES, including:

  • Animated Dragon with Fire.  Dragon hovers over the perch (in itself a fantastic item), flaps wings & breathes fire every 4 seconds (just touch to start the animations).  Only a video could do this justice!  The detailing is simply awesome… just look at the “ribs” in the wings!   • Fantasy Stream Decor.  Features a lovely stream with animated water, & fantasy plantings along each side. There’s a rock dam at each end with a fantasy arched tree, together with some butterfly flowers. 
  • Fantasy Grass Hill.  The perfect “foundation” for a fantasy build!  It’s a very low mound on which to place some of your fantasy scenes to transition from green grass to fantasy building.  Not only is it copy, so you can add as many as you need, it has a 4-color texture change menu — blue, pink, purple, white — to liven up your landscaping. A must-have for the fantasy landscaper!
  • Fantasy Trees, Small.   A sneak peek at an upcoming new release that’s perfect when you just need a little more to “fill in” the scene.
