I just can’t believe it’s the last day of Fantasy Faire!

Sighs, it just goes so fast! All that anticipation beforehand, all the joy when the Fairelands emerge out of the mists in all new, surprising, amazingly creative forms, and now the sadness as the gates ready to close… But that is the beauty of the Faire and part of its allure… Luckily the Faire was extended by Patch Linden for two days is open till midnight SLT today May 6th... and who knows? there’s a rumor that the gates may remain open into the next morning, but no guarantees on that! But there’s still time to explore that one Faireland you may have missed, hit those stores to get those last-minute purchases, and help the goal of building a world without cancer. Fantasy Faire 2025 has relayed L$24,569,536 by the end of the eighteenth day of the Faire. There’s still time to kick that number up a notch or two, and at Fantasy Faire, shopping with a cause is just so much fun! So here I am, sad that it’s ending, happy that I got to spend so much within the gates… So much pressure to make sure I’ve seen and done everything I can!!!! Sooo busy with Fantasy Faire… so much exploring to do, so much shopping, so much entertainment… my partner joined me at the Faire one night and we went dancing up on the ship amongst such a variety of avatars it was like being at the bar in a Star Wars movie (but much friendlier lol)! Time to celebrate! My most favorite time of year, I can’t stop smiling and my wings are getting tired from all the excited flapping! Dedicated to building a World without Cancer, Fantasy Faire is a megaevent benefitting the American Cancer Society , and is in its 17th year of delighting Second Life residents. To quote from the press release, Fantasy Faire is “the largest gathering of fantasy designers, enthusiasts, roleplayers and performers in the virtual world. From Thursday, April 17 to Sunday May 4, treat yourself to shopping, dance and theater performances, DJ parties, auctions, questing, our Literary Festival, thematic events and roleplaying as thousands of Second Life residents and creators bring their own visions together to support the American Cancer Society’s vision of a world without cancer.

As one dream ends, another begins…

Even a fae has dreams of what life could be. In the last week, my dream was to be a mermaid, but alas it proved too challenging for me at this point to trade in my wings for a tail. Everything was going wrong, from developing an extreme line at the neck to having issues with poses and so much more that I finally realized it was just not meant to be in the limited time before Fantasy Faire closes its doors again and disappears into the mists. Everything was going wrong IRL as well, with myself, my son, & my grandson all having accidents that left us each with a broken bone. As difficult and frustrating as that has been been (especially since I am long distance from both of them), I recognize how lucky I am… these are all non-traumatic injuries that will heal. It helped me realize that I had lost sight of the far bigger dream that is the essence of Fantasy Faire… the dream of a world without cancer. Today, May 7th, is the last day of this celebration of fantasy life in SL and its goal for all humankind. We all want to see THAT fantasy world, a world without cancer. Fantasy Faire is such an exciting creative delight that it’s sometimes easy to forget the more serious side of the Faire… that it is a Relay for Life charity event, a benefit for the American Cancer Society. Cancer is that dreaded monster lurking in the shadows that haunts all of us. I don’t know anyone who hasn’t been touched by it in some way. I think we all shudder and inwardly sigh when we hear of another family member, a friend, a friend of a friend, a neighbor, or even a casual acquaintance who gets that dreaded diagnosis, is in the midst of their fight, or has battled and won (or even worse, has lost). The personal battles are chilling reminders of the fragility of life, how things can change in a moment… the Faire is a way to fight the greater war by SHOPPING WITH A PURPOSE, providing funds to help build a tantalizing fantasy… a world without cancer. Unlike the fantasy creations and wonders that we celebrate at the Faire, RFL’s fantasy is do-able… and the more dollars that we can send to this amazing charity, the greater the arsenal at their disposal. C’mon guys, A Faire-n’ we will go!

OK, I’ll admit it… I’ve been going a bit crazy at the 2024 Fantasy Faire, which just opened on April 18th and will now run through May 5th. But like many other fantasy characters in SL, I look forward to this incredibly special event all year long. There is just nothing else in Second Life quite like it… And I am so absolutely thrilled to be an official blogger that I’ve been busy shopping the Faire since the moment it opened (truth be told, a day before with early access lol). Why am I and so many others so enraptured by Fantasy Faire? It’s a few things, and the reasons do, of course, vary person to person. For me, it’s really three things. First and foremost, it’s the sheer creative genius on display throughout the 20 completely unique and distinctive regions. It constantly boggles my fae brain how so many designers can not only envision these realms but can make them come to life, especially if you get “off the trail” and explore some of the hidden nooks… they are truly world builders! Second, well, it’s the shopping. I’m a shop-a-holic, which I guess is why I’m a blogger… I just love to not just put on a new outfit but create a whole character with it… or a scene… or both! And with over 300 of SL’s top fantasy designers showing at FF24, well, let’s just say that I saved up my lindens in order to stock up on all sorts of goodies. And third, which really is the most important and impactful reason to support Fantasy Faire is that it’s one of the premier events in Second Life benefiting the American Cancer Society. At the end of the 3rd day, this year’s FF has already relayed a whopping $L$6,661,584 … now that’s shopping with a purpose!!!! Come join us, and you too can be a Fairelander!

Fantasy Faire is almost here!

As far as I’m concerned, it’s almost the most wonderful time of the year for my blogging… Fantasy Faire 2024 opens in just a few days on April 18th, running thru May 5th (I simply CANNOT wait!!!!). A Relay for Life event, Fantasy Faire is celebrating its 16th year, and is the largest gathering of fantasy designers, enthusiasts, roleplayers and performers in the virtual world. As paraphrased from the official Press Release, you can treat yourself to shopping, dance and theater performances, DJ parties, auctions, questing, the Literary Festival, fantasy art, events and roleplaying as thousands of Second Life residents and creators bring their own visions together to support the American Cancer Society’s vision of a world without cancer. You’ll find fantasy avatars, clothing, furnishings, gadgets and exclusive items available from over 300 of Second Life’s top Fantasy Creators across 20 stunning regions designed by the visionary artists behind many of the most adored spots on the Second Life destination guide. I am so honored and absolutely thrilled to the tips of my wings to be an official Fantasy Faire blogger for the fourth year in a row!!!! Such exciting things to come… here are just a few of them!

A Fae’s Fantasy

Even a fae sometimes dreams of a different life… not just as a warrior or a high priestess or a princess or a simple shepherdess, but totally, wildly different (the way a human dreams of donning wings and owning the skies). After dropping into the undersea worlds at Fantasy Faire (which sadly ends May 8th!!!!), I was tortured over an overwhelming desire to trade my wings and horns in for a tail, and thanks to my very very good friend who often plays as a mermaid (and gifted me the tail!!!), I took the plunge as it were into a whole new world (sorry, a whole new world of plays-on-words is open, and I simply can’t resist!). Although I still have an awful lot to learn about underwater photography, etc., and my inventory is sadly lacking in mermaid paraphernalia and accessories, I am definitely hooked and anticipate creating many more posts of my fae dreamworld… not quite an alt’s alt, but definitely a different reality! (As a side note, I just discovered that SL is celebrating the mermaid community and calling this “MerMay” with some special mermaid last names available for a limited time, so even though I am definitely not changing my name or creating another alt, my timing is perfect!) And on that note, I happily flip my tail (it really is so cool lol), and swim off to explore the weekend sales and spend as much time at Fantasy Faire as possible before the gates close for the year! There are several Fairelands with underwater areas to explore (The Isles of Aquarius and Sambaubee are where I indulged my first swimming adventure). And remember… the purpose behind Fantasy Faire is not just to celebrate the world of fantasy in Second Life… it’s a mega Relay for Life event to work towards a much larger and more critical fantasy, a world without cancer. This is Fantasy Faire’s 15th year, and it has relayed more than $632,000 USD for the American Cancer Society in that time.
