OK, I’ll admit it… I’m on a classic movie binge.  There are just so many with lines that are so iconic, they’ve made it into that little book of sayings we all use.  Hopefully, I’m not being quite as pretentious as Norma Desmond (the character in Sunset Boulevard), but I do find that close-ups are always harder than I remember.  At first, I’m always “this will be easy to pull together, it’s just the head” but (and it’s a BIG but) it actually takes just as much if not more prep.  You’re not showing an entire outfit, but SOMETHING always gets into the shot, so you still need to coordinate it all (except shoes… you can get away going barefoot lol).  And let’s face it… if you’re not shooting at home, you need to be dressed and not just running around in your skin.  A beautiful hairstyle may not work well on a closeup… in a case like this one, it can’t block the eye makeup or the earrings, and those hairs that sometimes pop through your ears?  Poses (which you need in order to stand still) create other issues… closeup they may not look natural, or the shoulder looks non-human, or the jewelry goes into your neck or shoulder.  And then there are the eyes… I’d be lost without my eye poser, sitting there waiting for the combination of facial anim and eye position to happen.  I guess if I did it more often, I’d be better at it.  I look at other bloggers/photographers who do head shots all the time, and I marvel at their talent, their ability to capture a moment.  But for me, it’s just part of my “portfolio” and what keeps blogging interesting and fun! I will say that it took a while, but in the end I was definitely ready for my closeup!  😉

So even though we’re just moving into fall, I’m starting to see lots of Halloween stuff.  I’ll admit that it’s giving me a bit of an itch to get started, but I’m holding back until I return from vacation at the end of the month. It IS bringing to mind some of my favorite costumes that I’ve seen over the years, both in RL and here on the grid.  One of my all-time favorites is from the classic Alfred Hitchcock move, The Birds.  Someone dressed up just like Tippi Hedren’s character in the scene where she was attacked by the birds — so she had on very classic clothing with a blonde French twist all messed up, a bird on her head and another on her shoulder, and she did that cringing movement with her hands up to protect against them while putting on a look of horror and fear.  it was absolutely awesome!  Well, I didn’t have the means to recreate it as perfectly as that unknown woman did, so I decided to do a more current reinvention as my personal homage, since to this day every time I see a whole bunch of birds on a tree or on the wires, I think of that movie and get just a wee bit nervous…  It would make a fantastic costume in here though (hint, hint, to any designers out there!)…  😉

Listening to A Summer Song

I really can’t believe how quickly that nip in the air appeared.  In the space of just a few days I went from wearing shorts and tank tops to jeans, 3/4 sleeves, and even a jacket at certain times of day. The trees have felt it, too, and are just starting to turn.  And although their autumnal color is very beautiful and the fall air is refreshing after the oppressive heat, it’s also bittersweet…  I’ve always found fall to be a little sad. All the beauty of fall is actually a form of death (of course, much of it is reborn in spring, but still).  And although it doesn’t mean as much as it once did, when there was a real break in life between summer and the rest of the year, there’s enough of a holdover from childhood for it to be a bit melancholy.  It’s the time of all the “lasts”… one last summer barbecue, one last swim in the lake, one last bonfire, sometimes it’s one last kiss… whatever your summer is about… whatever made it special to you.  The weatherman says we’ll be back in shorts for a couple of days midweek, but I know that’s just a delaying tactic by mother nature… summer’s end is coming, if not already here… and it’s time for that one lasting look around before it’s gone (at least until next year!)… and to turn around and head into the next season with its own beauty, its own pleasures…  They’re already selling Halloween candy in the RL stores and Halloween costume here on the grid… can pumpkin spice latte be far behind?  😉

That is definitely one of THE most memorable lines ever!  One of my favorites from an oldtime classic movie (in case you don’t know, it’s from All About Eve). I just love going all Bette Davis in attitude — at least here in SL, not so much in real life… I just can’t carry it off lol — kind of a “caustic sophisticate” as my BFF here in SL put it.  This dress just called for it all… martinis (offscreen, already imbibed), cigarettes, and of course, the sultry attitude; I’ll leave the throaty delivery of the line up to your imagination.  😉

Summer appears to have ended rather abruptly up here in the northeastern US; it definitely feels like early fall.  I’m already wearing jeans, a jacket, closed shoes, and even socks.  Although I haven’t made the jump yet to booties, it’s definitely looming.  It seems like fall has begun here on the grid as well.  Gone are the little summer fashions; new releases are designed for nippier weather.  Bloggers are definitely making the move as well, going to autumnal scenes.  I received a notice from my estate owners that for the first time, the estate group is going to do autumn (they always winterize).  So yes, even though my “summer vacation” is happening in a about two weeks, I’m also making the move into the next fashion season, though I’m sure — just as in the real world — there will still be a few days of what they used to call “Indian Summer”.  And with global warming and the environment as messed up as it is, who knows? There may be many! I’m certainly not switching over my closet anytime soon!  But it is definitely nice to be done with that overheating and melting from the heat and humidity… but until the leaves start turning, it’s just not really fall!!! 😉

Play Misty for Me

I’m much more of a book person than I am a movie person; I don’t go anywhere without a book and there are times when I read a book a week.  But that doesn’t mean I don’t love movies, they’re just not as integrated into my day-to-day.  There are definitely certain movies that stand out in my memory and interrupt my thoughts now and then.  Some of them are among the greats — Casablanca, Gone With the Wind for instance… others are the blockbusters (think Lord of the Rings).  But others that fall way short of that mark,have something — some moment, some scene, some thought — that struck home and has become part of MY story.  These include Moonlighting (“snap out of it!”), Defending Your Life (Shirley Maclaine hosting the Past Lives Pavilion; being able to eat whatever you want and never gain weight!), The Princess Bride (Inconceivable!), and Play Misty for Me (I’m sorry, but Clint Eastwood was just too gorgeous in it lol).  Like so much else, these movies drift through the deep waters of memory, rising to the surface suddenly by a stray current created by a random catalyst.  In this case, the catalyst was the moody background of this windlight.  It made me think of mist… and well, mist either always make me think of Brigadoon (another B or C movie favorite, and one I can sing to!) and/or Play Misty for Me…  Of course now I’ve got the music from Brigadoon running through my head, because I’m definitely not feeling “as helpless as a kitten up a tree” in this dress… Just be thankful you can’t hear me sing!  😉

  • Dress:  WellMade – Jamille Dress.  On a scale of 1 to 10 for sexy, this dress is definitely a 10.  It has all kinds of teasing little features — the satiny halter top that rises from the skirt front leaving the sides & back bared… the laces on either side of the skirt front… the very short cut of that skirt…  But part of what makes it a 10 in my book is that it exudes sex while maintaining class & style… it never crosses that line over into what I’ll call “slut wear”.  Let’s face it: slut wear is very prevalent & definitely has its place here on the grid at least, but I generally prefer those styles that skirt the line without crossing it, keeping a bit of mystery to add to the allure. As the summer unofficially ends, I can’t help but wonder where it went. I remember when it felt like summer would last forever, and it was filled with so many new experiences and just “stuff.”  Now it speeds by and I feel like I’ve done so little.  I guess that’s part of being older… life just flies by.  At least we had a great weekend to end it, going to a big family party in another state, and doing some good old-fashioned “touring” around a town.  Since I have immediate family down in Florida, there’s obviously been a worrisome edge to everything I do, just from the unknown and the inability to do anything.  But our “summer vacation” is still to come, since now that we no longer have to deal with school schedules and the like, we have found it just makes sense to wait till the crowds lessen and the prices drop. Just a few more weeks to go… can’t wait! Till then, I’ll milk what I can out of summer’s end…  😉

This pic is so far from my regular life — inworld OR out — that it made me stop and think a bit.  I mean “back in the day” (and no, I’m not going to say how far back that is!!!) it wasn’t quite so unusual, though I’d certainly never dress like THIS lol.  But I’ve been married in real life to a great guy for a veritable lifetime, and partnered inworld to another wonderful guy for over 11 years.  Long-standing relationships and hanging out by yourself in a bar (at least as a woman) don’t exactly go hand in hand.  Not that there’s anything wrong with it per se, but there’s just no longer any appeal in it for me.  (Unless there’s live music… live music changes everything!)  But clothes have a voice of their own, and this dress demands being taken out and seen and wanted… but since the person wearing it (me!) isn’t really interested in the bar scene or its possibilities, the result is a bit of a miss.  The look may say “hot to trot”, but the girl is definitely not!!!  (Not until MY guy shows up, that is lol)  😉

Dancing by myself

So yesterday was another day of frustration with my site. I was very unhappy with the subscriber email that went out, and spent quite some time trying to change it. It’s all code, and I have no idea what I’m doing, so I apologize to anyone who gets it if it’s a mess… I will continue to update it until it’s right.  But what really made me crazy (and has made my blood pressure go WAY up lol) was trying to add the little blue WordPress rectangle for readers to follow me on WordPress (thank you Victoria for alerting me that it was missing!).  When I was unable to add it, I went to BlueHost via chat (they host my site). After saying, oh that will take just a few minutes, I was sitting there for over an hour being told just a few more minutes, so sorry, I have to go consult with a higher level, only to end up with a blue FOLLOW button at the bottom of my sidebar that upon clicking took you back up to the top of the page to my email subscriber option.  Unbelievable.  I took to Twitter to vent my frustration where my sanity was rescued by WordPress Medic.  I now have my button and am keeping them in my go-to list for help since everything seems to be working as it should.  Then again, I haven’t seen the email that will go out for this post, but I’ll keep my fingers crossed and do my happy dance until then! 😉

  • Outfit:   1 Hundred (new mainstore coming soon)– Sweet Miami Heat.  It’s sweet & it definitely sizzles!  The cut is awesome — open lacing on the not-too-short crop top; open snaps on the sides of the cutest cut-offs. But the texture even outdoes the cut… the top “wrinkles” perfectly for the lacing, pulling exactly where it should; the shorts do the same & even have a bit of tearing from so much wear.  These are the touches that make an outfit stand out & look realistically fitted. And the pattern!   • Body:  Slink – Hourglass Mesh Body Original, Full Version including Hands (Dynamic) & Feet… 1st time wearing this body!  For some reason, it seems that some of the mesh creators are limiting sizes & not always offering Physique.  For a blogger, not being able to wear styles because of a sizing issue is unacceptable. Since I had the body in inventory but had originally preferred Physique, feeling that Hourglass was just a bit too much for me, I worked on the shape & I have to admit I absolutely LOVE the result.  So you’ll be seeing a lot more of Hourglass in the future…

Well this past weekend was certainly one full of change in terms of this blog.  One of my followers had alerted me a few weeks ago that there was a problem with the links going out via email.  Seems that the email subscriber widget was now signing people up to follow the STAGING SITE, and not the production site.  My hosting company couldn’t resolve it, so I had contacted JetPack, who made the widget.  In order to make sure I had enough time to solve the problem — even if I temporarily made it worse, which was definitely a possibility! — I tackled it over the weekend.  After following the instructions to uninstall and then reinstall JetPack, I found that there was no longer an option to add in Subscriber Signup.  So I did it again, to the same result.  So yes, now I’d made it worse lol!  Research showed that I’d be better off having a “real” email campaign manager so I signed up for MailChimp, and installed a new subscriber enrollment box.  The good news — it works! The bad news — anyone who had previously registered is lost, and will have to re-register.  If that includes you, I sincerely apologize, but at least now it will work.  On the other hand, I don’t really know yet what you’ll receive, but at this point I personally know everyone who is re-registered, so there’s still time for me to update before post #2.

But that’s not all! Sadly, the Boardwalk Event has closed forever. I loved blogging for this event. It was so different from what I generally do, and gave me so many ideas and ways to showcase fashion.  Since their loss also freed up quite a bit of time, I’ve opened myself up to some new sponsorship opportunities… and I now have one of my favorite clothing lines! So exciting!!! I’ve also applied to one or two events, so there might be more changes down the line.  Fingers crossed!  All I know is that I’ll either be celebrating with, or cheering myself up with, my most favorite food… ICE CREAM!  Nothing’s better when you’re up or when you’re down! And just to end on a funny little note, here I had titled this post “Nothing’s better than Ice Cream”, only to find out that waaaay back, I had already used that title… proof on how much I love my frozen little treats!  😉

  • Dress:  !!smesh – NEW! Georgia.  This is the dress that did it for me; it pushed me over the line from a fan to an addict, to the point where I wanted to blog for the brand more than occasionally! Luckily for me, they took me on as a blogger (otherwise I don’t know how I would have fed this new addiction lol).  Georgia is just an exceptional little dress… it reminds me of a very stylish, men’s shirt missing its top, in a washed-out wide pastelly stripe. A few buttons in the middle are unbuttoned, as are the sleeves almost up to the elbow; there’s this incredible open mesh panel running all the way up the sides & on the half sleeves.  Comfy, sexy, & so easy to wear since it includes a matching thong, heeled booties & a even a stunning little choker! And if you want to kick the sexy up a notch, there’s a HUD to adjust the sheer & make the dress as transparent as you like (up to 40%).
